Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the Missions of the American Board Among the North American Indians Mr. Kingsbury went on his way rejoicing. In Octo her he had a grand talk with the assembled chiefs of the Cherokees and the Creeks, at the close of which a principal chief took him by the hand, and sententiously informed him: We have listened to what you have said, and have understood it. We are glad to see you. We wish to have the schools established, and hope they will be of great benefit to the nation. Another chief was appointed to assist in selecting a site, and they fixed upon Chickamauga, ten miles from the place forty-seven years later made famous by the repulse of the Union army, on the banks of the creek which some rebel termed the River of Death, and seven miles, also, from the brow of that Lookout Mountain, where, in the bat tle of the clouds, the Confederacy received a stunning blow. The missionaries called it Brainerd. A neigh boring height still bears the name of Mission Ridge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Historical Sketch or Compendious View of Domestic and Foreign Missions in the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America: Prepared at the Request of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church The Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian church, at their meeting in Baltimore, in October and November 1837, passed the following resolution: viz. "Resolved, That the Rev. Dr. Green be requested to draw up a history of the Foreign Missionary operations of the Presbyterian church in the United States, to be published by the Executive Committee, with the proceedings of this Board." When the duty assigned by the foregoing resolution came to be performed, it was found on examination, that Domestic and Foreign Missions in the Presbyterian church, had not only been conducted by the same agencies, but that, to some extent, they had been mingled together. A compendious view of both, was therefore determined on, as stated in the introduction to the Sketch. Institutions established or conducted mainly by associations or individuals, not immediately connected with the Presbyterian church, when mentioned at all, have received but a cursory and summary notice. Their operations have not been traced, although carried on in concert with members of the Presbyterian denomination. Institutions characteristically Presbyterian have been regarded as the only proper subjects of any thing like historical detail.
