Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Education in Wisconsin The object of this work is to present to the National Centennial of our country, for 1876, an account of the origin and development of the educational system in Wisconsin. Though the state is comparatively young, it has taken an advanced position in fostering its public schools and its state institutions of learning. The academies and denominational colleges, while not immediately connected with our educational system, have performed valuable work for the state. The school system has been traced to its sources in the earliest movements in Wisconsin; and the successive stages of its growth, during the territorial government and under the state organization, have been carefully noticed. The materials of this history have been obtained from documents issued by the different state departments, from an examination of many of the places mentioned, from interviews and correspondence with the early pioneers, and from the personal recollections of the author. Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Normal Instruction in Wisconsin It is with great reluctance that I give this sketch to the printer. The Normal schools of Wisconsin deserve, in this Columbian year, a more careful and thoughtful treatment than it has been possible for me to give them with justice to other demands and duties. The fact that I had prepared a similar sketch for the Centennial celebration seemed to fix the duty upon me again. Chapters I., II. and III. of the present sketch are taken, with but slight modification, from that of 1876. Much other material from the earlier outline, broken up and recast, has been made to do duty a second time. The kind assistance given me by the presidents of the several schools deserves a better result than is here presented. I must, therefore, be allowed to plead that what follows is not offered as history but only as material for history. With this thought in mind, all possible care has been given to secure accuracy in fact. No time or strength was left for attempting finish or elegance in the form of presentation. Neither has it been possible, under the circumstances, to adequately analyze the facts presented and draw from them their full meaning; though some unsatisfactory effort has been made in that direction. Much regretting that proper time and labor could not be given to so congenial an undertaking, the result is submitted to those who can make use of it. Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Normal Instruction in Wisconsin 1846-1876 In the preparation of this sketch, as will easily be seen, there has been no attempt at ornament; there has been, however, a persistent and laborious effort at accuracy in matters of fact. But in an account extending over so many years, and prepared under such circumstances as this, it must needs be that some omissions and even errors exist. The most that can be hoped is that they are not serious ones. It has been the aim to make a tolerably complete and convenient book of reference, and at the same time to preserve, as far as possible, the form of a connected narrative. With this in view, the matter has been arranged in chapters under such general heads that a person interested only in a particular point or direction need not be compelled to read the whole book in order to find the desired information. Although this plan has made considerable repetition necessary, it has been adhered to faithfully throughout, even where the repetition was very distasteful to the writer. Excerpt from A Historical Sketch of the Wisconsin Teachers Association in Its First Half Century, 1853-1903 In the year 1876, in the midst of the Centennial glow, the writer hereof was deputed to collate a historical sketch of the Wisconsin Teachers' Association, then approaching the close of its first quarter-century. This assignment resulted in the preparation of a paper, which was read at the 25th Annual Meeting of the Association, at Green Bay, in 1877. That paper was afterwards expanded into a pamphlet which was published by the Association in 1878. For its data concerning the earlier years of the organization, it was greatly indebted to an earlier sketch, written by Joeiah L. Pickard in 1860, and also to personal recollections of Dr. Pickard, John G. McMynn, and others, which were gathered from them by correspondence and interviews. The official records of the Association, moreover, furnished indispensable and reliable material. As the fiftieth year of the Association found me still in the ranks, I was again drafted into service, and set to write a review of its work through two quarters of a century for the "Jubilee Session," in Milwaukee, December 29th, 1902. This, as in the former instance, engendered a request that the paper be expanded for publication. The result is here presented, with much misgiving as to its adequacy. The original sketch, of 1878 has been freely used, much of its matter having been transferred bodily, while other parts have been recast to suit the wider undertaking. This was the more permissible since the original pamphlet is now rare and almost forgotten, as this may be a few years hence. At the same time, the paper presented at the Jubilee Session has been freely modified, both by addition and omission, to suit the new purpose.
