The 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Columbus, MS, in May 1862, composed principally of men who reorganized, in two or three instances, as entire companies after serving a year as the 2nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. Slightly more than seven hundred officers and enlisted men were mustered into service as members of the regiment. It was part of the garrison of Vicksburg and lost 10 killed and about 50 wounded there, with the remainder captured at the surrender. The 42nd was in parole camp at Demopolis, then it joined the Army of Tennessee. It fought with severe losses at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. In the spring of 1864, the 42nd fought at Resaca with a loss of 59 killed and wounded. It was then continually skirmishing until the battle of New Hope, where its loss was comparatively light as it was at Atlanta the 22nd of July. On the 28th of July, the loss was heavy. A few days later, the regiment was sent to Spanish Fort where it remained on garrison duty during the fall and until January 1865. It then moved into North Carolina, participated in the battle of Bentonville, and surrendered with the army. Records indicate that the Forty-Second Alabama Infantry was detached from the main body of the Army of Tennessee in early April 1865. The GA 38th Infantry Regiment was a part of the Lawton - Gordon - Evans brigade made up of the 13th, 26th, 31st, 38th, 60th, & 61st Georgia Regiments and the 12th Georgia Light Artillery Battalion. It fought in many conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then moved with Early to the Shenandoah Valley and was active around Appomattox. The unit lost 54 killed and 118 wounded at Gaines' Mill and sixty-two percent of the 123 engaged at Sharpsburg. In the fight at Fredericksburg there were 10 killed and 91 wounded, and of the 341 at Gettysburg, more than thirty-five percent were disabled. It surrendered with 112, of which 73 were armed.

The 40th Alabama Infantry was organized by Col. A. A. Coleman on the 13th day of March, 1862, at Speeds Mill in Pickens County, Alabama. It was mustered into Confederate service in May 1862 at Mobile. The regiment remained in Mobile until December when it was moved to Vicksburg to take part in the operations on Deer Creek. While there, it was brigaded with the 37th and 42nd Alabama, and 2nd Texas, under General J. C. Moore. The regiment had 332 effectives in January, 1863. Four companies were there transferred to General Ector's Brigade, General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee and fought at Chickamauga. The other companies of the 40th were part of the garrison of Vicksburg, suffered severely, and were there captured. The regiment was reunited near Missionary Ridge and took part in that battle and at Lookout Mountain, where it suffered 135 casualties. The 40th took part in the campaign from there to Atlanta, with losses especially heavy at New Hope. During the Atlanta Campaign, May 7-31, it lost twenty percent of the 416 engaged. When the army marched back to Tennessee, in company with the other regiments of Baker's Brigade, the 40th was sent to Mobile and was on garrison duty there for some months. In January 1865, the regiment proceeded with the remainder of the army to North Carolina and shared in the operations, fighting at Bentonville with severe loss. The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, in the spring of 1862, under the requisition of President Jefferson Davis for 12,000 more Alabamians Ordered to Columbus, MS, after a short time, the regiment proceeded to Tupelo. There it was placed in General Henry Little's Division, and in the Brigade of Col. Martin of TN, with three Mississippi regiments. General Dabney Herndon Maury succeeded General Little when the latter was killed at Iuka, where the 37th was first engaged, with some loss. After Corinth the 37th was placed into a brigade with the 2nd TX, and 42nd AL, General John C. Moore commanding. The 37th lost heavily at Lookout Mountain and quite a number at Mission Ridge. The winter passed at Dalton, GA, where General Alpheus Baker of Barbour took charge of the brigade. The regiment was then engaged at Chattanooga (73 casualties out of 407 men present), Resaca, Noonday Creek, Kennesaw, and the battles around Atlanta. In one charge at Atlanta, 22 July, the regimental commander and 40 men were killed outright, out of 300 men present. During the fall and winter, the 37th was on garrison duty at Spanish Fort, then moved into North Carolina. The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Consolidated, was organized on 9 April 1865 by combining the original 37th Alabama with the 42nd and 54th Alabama regiments, at Smithfield, NC. It broke the enemy line at Bentonville, and furled its colors a few days later, with 300 of its number present out of the 1100 who took the field originally. . The Alabama 7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Pensacola, 18 May 1861, with 8 infantry and 2 mounted companies. It remained on duty there until November. The regiment was ordered to Chattanooga in November, and then a month later, was sent to Bowling Green. The remainder of Gen. Bragg's forces were ordered out of Florida on 27 FEB 1862. Gen. Bragg joined up with Gen. Beauregard's forces in Jackson, Tennessee. The 7th was in a temporary brigade under Col. S. A. M. Wood, and it was included in the Army of Tennessee around Corinth. The time of service of most of the companies expired after 12 months during the first week in April, 1862, and the regiment disbanded. However, the two mounted companies from Autauga and Lauderdale retained their organization and fought at Shiloh, as did other men from the regiment. The mounted companies became part of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry following Shiloh and the majority of the remaining men and officers joined other organizations. The 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Talladega, 16 March 1862, with men from Calhoun, Cherokee, Montgomery, Randolph, Shelby, and Talladega counties. It reported to General Danville Leadbetter at Chattanooga shortly after. It then moved up to Knoxville, where it was brigaded under General Seth Barton, in Carter Stevenson's Division. After the Kentucky Campaign, the 31st was permanently brigaded with the 20th, 23rd, 30th, and 46th Alabama regiments, under General Edward D. Tracy of Madison, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. In December, the 31st accompanied Stevenson's Division to Vicksburg. There were 260 effectives in January, 1863, with 21 killed and 37 wounded at Vicksburg. Following parole at Vicksburg, the 31st continued throughout the remainder of the war with the Army of Tennessee. There were 23 casualties at Chattanooga, and in December, 1863, there were 452 present with 323 arms. Only 180 were fit for duty in January 1865, and less than 100 surrendered in April. Toward the close of the war, the 31st was consolidated with the 23rd and 46th Infantry and redesignated the 23rd Consolidated Infantry Regiment at Smithfield, 9 April 1865. The Alabama 54th Infantry Regiment was made up of six Alabama companies of the First Alabama-Mississippi-Tennessee Regiment of Col. Baker of Barbour, and four Alabama companies of the regiment of Col. L. M. Walker of Tennessee. These companies had been captured at Island Ten, after nearly a year's arduous service above Memphis. Organized at Jackson, Miss, October 1862, the Fifty-fourth operated in the vicinity of Vicksburg during the winter. It fought at Fort Pemberton with light loss, and at Baker's Creek with equal result. Having escaped Vicksburg by moving with Gen. Loring from Baker's Creek, the Fifty-fourth was soon after at the siege of Jackson. It was then transferred to the army of Gen. Bragg. The regiment wintered at Dalton, and was engaged in the campaign from there to Atlanta, when the Army of Tennessee disputed the ground inch by inch, and stained those inches with blood. The regiment lost severely at Resaca, and at Atlanta July 22. The loss was very heavy at Atlanta July 28, more than half the regiment being killed and wounded, and the flag perforated by forty bullets. Having moved with Hood into middle Tennessee, the Fifty-fourth shared the privations and disasters of that campaign. Transferred to North Carolina, its colors waved defiantly at Bentonville, its last battlefield. A remnant only were surrendered with the forces of Gen. Johnston.
