Excerpt from Historical Collections of Georgia The flattering reception given by my fellow-citizens to "The Statistics of Georgia," naturally encouraged me to venture still farther in that field, which must ever be a favourite with the patriotic Georgian. Ten years of incessant labour, expense, and travel throughout the State, have been cheerfully bestowed, and the "Historical Collections of Georgia" are the result. No source of knowledge has been neglected or despised. The Libraries of Charleston, Savannah, Milledgeville, and New-York, have been diligently searched. The Colonial Documents kindly furnished me by the Legislature of Georgia, to aid in the compilation of this work, have been freely used. A large amount of information has been gleaned, moreover, from aged persons - "the oldest inhabitants" of many of our towns and villages - whose memories are proverbially tenacious in regard to events, which made their vivid impressions in early youth. In January 1961, following eighteen months of litigation that culminated in a federal court order, Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter became the first black students to enter the University of Georgia. Calvin Trillin, then a reporter for Time Magazine, attended the court fight that led to the admission of Holmes and Hunter and covered their first week at the university—a week that began in relative calm, moved on to a riot and the suspension of the two students "for their own safety," and ended with both returning to the campus under a new court order. Shortly before their graduation in 1963, Trillin came back to Georgia to determine what their college lives had been like. He interviewed not only Holmes and Hunter but also their families, friends, and fellow students, professors, and university administrators. The result was this book—a sharply detailed portrait of how these two young people faced coldness, hostility, and occasional understanding on a southern campus in the midst of a great social change.

Excerpt from Collections of the Georgia Historical Society, Vol. 3 Through the researches of Mr. G. W. J. DeRenne, of this city, a gentleman who has devoted much time to historical inquiry, the Georgia Historical Society became aware of the fact that copies could be obtained from the British Colonial Office, of valuable manuscripts connected with the early history of the Colony of Georgia. On a subsequent visit to England, Mr. DeRenne was empowered by the Society to procure copies of such valuable documents appertaining to the history of Georgia, not hitherto printed, as could be found in the Colonial Office. The Society thus obtained copies of 1st. The Letters of General Oglethorpe to the Trustees of the Colony, commencing October 29th, 1735, which was the period of his return from his first visit to England after the settlement of the Colony, and ending August 24th, 1744. 2d. Letters from Sir James Wright, Governor of the Province of Georgia, to the Earl of Dartmouth, and Lord George Germain, Secretaries of State, and others, in which he narrates the local events of the War of Rebellion by which the Thirteen Colonies became separated from the mother country.
