Book Description
Excerpt from Historic Sketches of the South The early settlers who have left their impress on American life and character were of the same country and traditions, but their manners and ideals had been developed by the Opposing forces which began to stir England during the Renais sance - a hundred and fifty years before the Refor mation - forces of which our own Civil War seems as direct a sequence as were the religio-political feuds of the 16th and 17th century England. In the New World the exponents of these contrasting forces were divided for the first century and a half by what afterwards became known as Mason's and Dixon's Line and by vast areas of uninhabited wilderness. Book Description
Excerpt from Sketches of Southern Scenes The desire to travel is almost universal, - to visit new scenes and meet people differing in appearance and customs from those encountered in every-day life. The present rapid and luxurious system of traveling, contrasted with the slow and comfortless facilities of other days, has developed an irresistible longing to see for one's self the wonders and beauties of other climes. Those who for various reasons are debarred from the indulgence of this luxury of travel, read or listen with avidity to de scriptions of the beautiful, grand or marvelous, whether beheld in foreign lands or on the shores of our own'country. Believing that to many of our friends an account of places visited by us would be of inter est, and serve also as a pleasant remembrancer to those who composed our party of tourists, on their. Book Description
Excerpt from Half-Hours in Southern History This is a book of sketches and might be entitled, A Sketch Book of Southern History. It aims to give in brief outline the salient features of Southern heroism and achievement, and to state rapidly the South's side of the long controversy between the sections. The author has tried to be fair, candid, and truthful. Extremists of either section will not like the volume. The fact that he is a Southerner, however, the author will attempt neither to palliate nor to deny; but he has aimed to write "with malice toward none, with charity for all." The facts stated in this volume have been gathered from a thousand sources; none have been manufactured. Of Southern civilization, the author speaks from experience, as he remembers vividly two generations that represented the Old South so-called. The work is a labor of love; its object, justice to all. Excerpt from Sketches From Memory As to the illustrations, they are for the most part also sketches, shorthand notes from nature, or care ful studies for backgrounds of 'pictures, portraits, landscapes, figures, &c., which illustrate my story, and give relief, I hope, to the printed pages. And now, dear reader, I must leave my Sketches in your hands, and as they are written without malice, and, indeed, with the kindest motives, I trust you also will treat them with kindness. Book Description
Excerpt from Dixie: Or Southern Scenes and Sketches The chapters which make up this volume first appeared in harper's magazine and harper's weekly as a series of papers upon the development of what may well be called Our New South and its resources. The descriptions of scenery and present conditions are my own, but the state ments which are of the most value and importance to a student of the material resources of the country are such as were made to me, and then verified by others - by the most shrewd and skilled, and at the same time disinterested, residents of the localities to which they apply. It would have required years of residence and special training for me to gather such information from my own experience. Perhaps the chapter upon St. Louis will not seem to be as wholly in place here as in the companion to this volume, called Our Great ivest. Truly, St. Louis belongs somewhere between the two sections, or more properly in both, for it is a Western city with a Southern and Southwestern trade. It is treated here because it is impossible to correctly con sider the Southern States without a knowledge of its forces and influence, and because these studies, and the main jour ney for making them, were properly begun at that city the gate of the Old way to the region bordering upon the Mississippi.
