Frontiers for Peace in the Medieval North
Author: Ian Peter Grohse
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004343652
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 305
Book Description
In Frontiers for Peace in the Medieval North. The Norwegian-Scottish Frontier c. 1260-1470, Ian Peter Grohse examines social and political interactions in Orkney, a Norwegian-held province with long and intimate ties to the Scottish mainland. Commonly portrayed as the epicentre of political tension between Norwegian and Scottish fronts, Orkney appears here as a medium for diplomacy between monarchies and as an avenue for interface and cooperation between neighbouring communities. Removed from the national heartlands of Scandinavia and Britain, Orcadians fostered a distinctly local identity that, although rooted in Norwegian law and civic organization, featured a unique cultural accent engendered through Scottish immigration. This study of Orcadian experiences encourages greater appreciation of the peaceful dimensions of pre-modern European frontiers.

Native Lordship in Medieval Scotland
Author: Cynthia J. Neville
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
In the century or so after 1125 significant numbers of Anglo-Norman and European noblemen settled in Scotland at the invitation of the crown, chiefly in the lowlands. North of the Forth, however, lay large provincial lordships ruled on behalf of the king by hereditary lords known as 'mormaers'. Even after the arrival of the newcomers, the native rulers of this area, Gaelic speakers for the most part, remained a small, powerful, and largely independent group. During a period of profound change for Scottish royal givernment, it saw Robert I seize power in 1306. Using the lordships of Strathearn and Lennox as focal points, this book explores the complex nature of the encounter between the cultures of the Gaels and the Europeans, and shows how important were native customs and practices in the making of the later medieval kingdom.

Historic Earls and Earldoms of Scotland (Classic Reprint)
Author: John Mackintosh
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331187172
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 364
Book Description
Excerpt from Historic Earls and Earldoms of Scotland The substance of this volume originally appeared in the columns of the "Aberdeen Weekly Journal," but it has been carefully revised and important additions made. From the variety of matter, and number of personages treated in the work, it may be interesting to a wide circle of readers. I have not deemed it necessary to burden the pages of this volume with a multiplicity of references and foot-notes, as the original sources of information are often indicated in the text itself. It may be well, however, to state that I have long been familiar with the national records of Scotland, such as the "Scots Acts of Parliament," "Exchequer Rolls," "Register of the Great Seal," "Register of the Privy Council," "National Manuscripts," "Burgh Records," and many other registers and important historic records too tedious to mention. Touching the sources of information more specially relating to this volume, I have consulted the family histories, charters, and papers, connected with the families treated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
