Book Description
This book is born with a clear objective: to tell stories of families that have created successful companies. Through these pages, we will discover the history of six Cantabrian family businesses belonging to the Cantabrian Family Business Association (ACEFAM), who will share their origins and trajectory with readers. Specifically, the companies presented are: Grupo Empresarial SIECSA, Grupo Fernández-Jove, Grupo Tirso, Industrias Jacinto Herrero, Semicrol and Tecnisa Campos. These stories provide an interesting view of various aspects and events that occur in family businesses, and highlight the importance of their values to focusing their business decisions. First, the history of business families is described, with special emphasis on the most relevant milestones that the different generations who have been or are currently at the helm of each company have had to face. Likewise, a specific reference to aspects related to corporate governance is included, describing the values on which these organizations are based. Finally, each of the cases provides a vision about the main challenges that, in the opinion of their managers, they will face in the future, with special mention of the different actions in the management of family-business relations. In summary, these stories will show the enthusiasm, effort and pride with which the current generations at the head of the companies have tried to give continuity to the legacy that their parents and grandparents began, which becomes an example of perseverance and good work in the region.

The Dog and the Fever
Author: William Carlos Williams
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780811221702
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
"Far more 'modern' than ever Hemingway or even Gertie ever thought of being" is how William Carlos Williams described The Dog and the Fever: "The first recorded use of the pure image to tell a story" and "hot as hell besides." Williams translated this Spanish novella, originally published in 1625, with the help of Raquel Hélene Williams, his Puerto Rican mother. Williams recalled that its biting satire -- targeting the corruption of the court, the church, and society and driven by comic double entendre -- made them laugh out loud and amused them tremendously as they worked on the translation. The editor, Jonathan Cohen, contributes a surprising introduction with details about Williams as translator and the novella's author Pedro Espinosa, setting the stage for this charming tale from the Spanish Golden Age.

Spain in America
Author: Richard L. Kagan
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 9780252027246
Category : Public opinion
Languages : en
Pages : 314
Book Description
Setting aside the pastiche of bullfighters and flamenco dancers that has dominated the U.S. image of Spain for more than a century, this innovative volume uncovers the roots of Spanish studies to explain why the diversity, vitality, and complexity of Spanish history and culture have been reduced in U.S. accounts to the equivalent of a tourist brochure. Spurred by the complex colonial relations between the United States and Spain, the new field of Spanish studies offered a way for the young country to reflect a positive image of itself as a democracy, in contrast with perceived Spanish intolerance and closure. Spain in America investigates the political and historical forces behind this duality, surveying the work of the major nineteenth-century U.S. Hispanists in the fields of history, art history, literature, and music. A distinguished panel of contributors offers fresh examinations of the role of U.S. writers, especially Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, in crafting a wildly romantic vision of Spain. They examine the views of such scholars as William H. Prescott and George Ticknor, who contrasted the "failure" of Spanish history with U.S. exceptionalism. Other essays explore how U.S. interests in Latin America consistently colored its vision of Spain and how musicology in the United States, dominated by German émigrés, relegated Spanish music to little more than a footnote. Also included are profiles of the philanthropist Archer Mitchell Huntington and the pioneering art historians Georgiana Goddard King and Arthur Kingsley Porter, who spearheaded U.S. interest in the architecture and sculpture of medieval Spain. Providing a much-needed look at the development and history of Hispanism, Spain in America opens the way toward confronting and modifying reductive views of Spain that are frozen in another time.
