Book Description
With the discovery of an ever increasing number of biogenetic polypeptides in the autonomic nervous system, it is evident that nervous transmission is controlled and modified not only by a series of classical transmitters but also by a variety of co-transmitters and modulators. Purifi cation, characterization and synthesis of neuropeptides and peptide families allows the application of specific anti bodies for radioimmunological, immunohistochemical and immunocytochemical localization. Transmitter interactions and phenotypic neuronal plasticity can be analyzed by pharmacological or surgical manipulations. Biochemical and autoradiographic determination of specific membrane receptors enables the recognition of peptide target struc tures. In addition, neurophysiological techniques in combi nation with histochemical methods result in functional interpretations. With regard to somatic manifestations of autonomic nervous disturbances these studies will offer fundamental insights for clinical medicine. This volume contains the refereed proceedings of recent investigations on histochemistry and cell biology of auton omic neurons and paraganglia which were presented at an international colloquium on nervous transmission in Heidelberg in September 1986. The colloquium was origi nally planned to be held under the presidency of Olavi Eranko but was continued by the editor after his death. It was sponsored by the German Research Foundation and took place on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Heidelberg University "Ruperto Carola" as part of the pro gram in the international "Wissenschaftsforum". Hopefully, the information provided in this book will stimu late new ideas and research strategies in the field of neu roscience.

Book Description
Central Adrenaline Neurons: Basic Aspects and their Role in Cardiovascular Functions contains the proceedings of an international symposium held at The Wenner-Oren Center, Stockholm on August 27-28, 1979. The purpose of the meeting is to summarize the knowledge of central adrenaline neurons and their role in cardiovascular functions. Organized into four sections, this book begins with a discussion on the morphology, biochemistry, and pharmacology of central adrenaline neurons. Subsequent sections detail the cardiovascular functions of central catecholamine neurons and the effects of centrally acting drugs on sympathetic function in normotensive and hypertensive patients. An overview lecture of the concept of a- and ß-adrenergic receptors is also shown.

Book Description
Innovative microscopic techniques, introduced during the last two decades, have contributed much to creating a new picture of the dynamic architecture of the cell, which can now be more exactly correlated with specific biochemical and physiopathological events. These developments have led to significant advances in our understanding of the physiomorphological and pathological aspects of the secretory mechanism, as well as the pharmacologic methods used to control, experimentally, the function of exocrine and endocrine glands. The integration of new ultrastructural methods such as freeze-fracture/etching, immunocytochemistry, scanning and high-voltage electron microscopy, cytoautoradiography, etc. , has proven to be of great value when applied to the study of endocrine cells and tissues. Because information on this topic has appeared in a variety of scientific and medical journals, this book: (1) reviews the results of an integrative approach presenting a comprehensive ultrastructural account of the main aspects of the field; (2) points out gaps or controversial topics in our knowledge; and (3) outlines pertinent directions for future research. The chapters, prepared by recognized authorities in the field, present traditional information on the topic in a concise manner and, with a valuable selection of original illustrations, show what the integration of new microscopic methods can contribute to the subject in terms of new concepts. This volume will be useful to cell biologists, anatomists, embryologists, histologists, pharmacologists, pathologists, and, of course, endocrinologists. It will also be of interest to students, practitioners of medicine, and to all others dealing with clinical research and diagnosis.
