Book Description
This is the story of a family in a small community whose journey of life took a severe turn when the eldest child discloses her nine-year heroin addiction. This disclosure sets into place a whirlwind change in all family dynamics as each member tries to acknowledge their emotions and new roles to support staying strong and connected to one another. It is also a book that illustrates the difficulty of staying together as a family in the face of the lack of being in sync with one anothers emotional and intellectual reactions. We have tried to be as real as possible with our anger, frustration, disappointment, happiness, pride, and amazement on how this part of our lives has turned out. It is not something we asked for, but it is something we have conquered. This is a story of losing and winning the pathway of recovery from both a family and individual perspective. Each chapter talks from an individual family members reality of what is going on, and it ends with the daughter who has/had the heroin addiction and her perspective of the family. We have added updates at the end to try to create an ending of sorts, knowing we will still be here over the next years fighting the good battle of sobriety as a family who has made it and stayed together through the addiction storm.

Book Description
An up-to-the-minute, comprehensive examination of heroin's history, pharmacology, psychology, and sociology, Heroin offers a spellbinding account of the drug's power and persistent allure, its medicinal benefits, and its destructive nature. This updated and expanded second edition provides new research into heroin's effects on the brain, the changing attitudes and policies about methadone and medications, and the different approaches to treating heroin addicts. Included are studies of violence along the U.S.-Mexican border--which has put heroin trafficking in the spotlight--as well as a focus on how the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have made opium a valuable commodity and a major source of funds for terrorists. Animated with vivid personal stories and vignettes, Heroin puts a human face on the long and complex story behind this notorious drug.

Book Description
This memoir is the harrowing story of one mother's journey through the hell of her daughter's heroin addiction. It is also a topical memoir that traces the social history of drug use from the youth culture of the 1960's to present time, and also examines public policy on drug abuse and its impact on our criminal justice system. The author’s story begins as a young woman whose mother, an antiques dealer, was murdered in her upscale suburban antiques shop in 1968; 3 days after the Chicago Democratic Convention where cops and hippies clashed in a historic confrontation. Subsequently, the author emerged into the youth culture of the 60’s, where rampant drug experimentation was the norm. Out of this chaos, the author then examines her personal history from that personal and social historic moment, leading to her subsequent marriage to an alcoholic, and then to the three children who were the offspring of that marriage. From the time her oldest daughter was a teenager her daughter exhibited addictive personality traits, culminating in a serious heroin addiction and consequent enmeshment in the criminal justice system. On the night of August 18, 2009, at 32 years of age, her daughter lost the battle to her addiction and died of a drug overdose. The suffering this addiction inflicted on her daughter, the family, and society at large is examined in an unflinching portrayal of the nefarious forces at work. Addiction is indeed a thief that steals a promising future from anyone who suffers from these compulsive behaviors, and it steals in an indiscriminate manner from all echelons of society. This moving story makes a brave attempt to understand solutions and treatments for drug addiction. Although the subject matter is gritty, the story is neither gloomy nor depressing, and may offer hope to families of addicts worldwide
