It cannot fail to be noticed how large a part the family have borne, in a modest way, in the history of the past century and a half, and particularly in the development of our own western country. A directory of the names, places of residence and occupation of all living members of the family will be found in the later pages of the book. Blank pages are provided at the end of the volume for the continuation of the record in manuscript. I trust they will be used, and urgently request that transcripts of all such additional records be sent to me for the perfecting from time to time of my own copy. Where so many members of the family have interested them selves to aid me with information, it would be invidious to single out any for special acknowledgments. Excerpt from Memorials of the Scripps Family: A Centennial Tribute Over nine years ago I published in a pamphlet of 28 pages a History of the Scripps Family. It had scarcely appeared before a mass of fresh information on the sub ject came to my hands, and this has continued steadily to accumulate up to the present date. This new light does not materially alter the facts as related in the publication of 1882, nor does it carry the history at all further back, but it clears up many points of uncertainty and supplies much interesting detail. After having for nine years industriously collected all I possibly could regarding the family, I now, in the centennial year of the. Emigration of the major portion to America, proceed to edit my collee tions and reduce them to print. With due respect, I herewith dedicate my little volume to the memory of William and Grace Scripps, who, in 1791, planted the family on this continent. Molly McClain tells the remarkable story of Ellen Browning Scripps (1836-1932), an American newspaperwoman, feminist, suffragist, abolitionist, and social reformer who used her fortune to support women's education, the labor movement, and public access to science, the arts, and education. Born in London, Scripps grew up in rural poverty on the Illinois prairie.
