Book Description
Excerpt from Hebrew Religion to the Establishment of Judaism Under Ezra It need scarcely be said that this little volume can make no claim to originality. It is simply an attempt to provide the general reader with a clear statement of fact on the history of Hebrew religion down to the middle of the fifth century B.C. In such a work references to modern authorities would have been out of place, and to give such references with anything like fulness would have been impossible in the space at command. It may, however, be well to say that my account of early Arabic religion has been drawn chiefly, except where other references are given, from Wellhausen's "Reste des arabischen Heidenthums." Some apology may be requisite for my frequent use of Greek and Latin authors. The quotations have always been made directly from my own reading at the time, reading which was undertaken without any thought of the Old Testament. Book Description
How did Jews perceive the first Christians? By what means did they come to appreciate Christianity as a religion distinct from their own? In The Christian Schism in Jewish History and Jewish Memory, Professor Joshua Ezra Burns addresses those questions by describing the birth of Christianity as a function of the Jewish past. Surveying a range of ancient evidences, he examines how the authors of Judaism's earliest surviving memories of Christianity speak to the perspectives of rabbinic observers who were conditioned by the unique circumstances of their encounters with Christianity to recognize its adherents as fellow Jews. Only upon the decline of the Church's Jewish demographic were their successors compelled to see Christianity as something other than a variation of Jewish cultural expression. The evolution of thought in the classical Jewish literary record thus offers a dynamic account of Christianity's separation from Judaism counterbalancing the abrupt schism attested in contemporary Christian texts.

Book Description
The post-exilic of Persian period showed a transition in the religion in ancient Israel from Yahwism(s) to Judaism(s). The events of exile and return made it impossible to completely fall back on the traditional religious identity. The essays in this volume try to reconstruct the path taken in that transition. The characters of Ezra and Nehemiah are generally seen as playing a formative role in this process. By reading texts from the biblical books supposedly written by Ezra and Nehemiah in a religio-historical context, new light falls on the process of change.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Documents of the Book of Ezra Finally, Stade and others have objected to ver. 10f. As betraying a Jewish view-point. But, as Meyer points out, the following are positive results of historical study that the great world-rulers of antiquity had sacrifices made for them at the shrines of the national cults, Jerusalem among the rest, and that the Persian kings were preeminent in this respect; that the sanctuary-privi. Leges and inviolable sanctity of those shrines were respected by the governing powers, and offenses against them were most severely punished; and finally, that the punishment of impaling here threatened, was a genuinely Persian form of meting out justice or injustice as the case might be.
