Alaska was one of 19 grantees to receive Tier 2 funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of Adolescent Health (OAH), to implement an adaptation of Promoting Health Among Teens (PHAT), an evidence-based TPP program. The Alaska version of the program, called AKPHAT, was adapted to address the unique needs of Alaska. The goal of AKPHAT was to provide programming in Anchorage and rural areas across the south-central and western parts of the state. AKPHAT in Anchorage reached local youth, as well as many who migrate from rural Alaska and often end up homeless. Programming in rural areas provided services directly where it is needed most. Statewide, the program targeted detention facilities, non-traditional schools, foster care, and mental health service providers.
