Book Description
This book takes as its inspiration the assumption that the atmosphere of intellectual openness, scientific inquiry, aspiration towards diversity, and freedom from political pressure that once flourished in the American Psychological Association has been eclipsed by an "ultra-liberal agenda," in which voices of dissent, controversial points of view, and minority groups are intimidated, ridiculed and censored. Chapters written by established and revered practitioners explore these important issues within the contexts of social change, the ways in which mental health services providers view themselves and their products, and various economic factors that have affected healthcare cost structure and delivery. In short, this book is intended to help consumers, practitioners, and policy makers to become better educated about a variety of recent issues and trends that have significantly changed the mental health fields.

Book Description
Today's fragile economic climate requires new solutions to the problem of high healthcare costs. Organizations simply cannot afford runaway medical expenses, unproductive workplaces, and sick workers. In this landmark book, Dee W. Edington, PhD, former Director of the University of Michigan Health Management Research Center, draws from his 30 years of research and experience to explain how organizations can control health management and disability expenditures while keeping their workforces healthy and productive. Dr. Edington's message is straightforward, yet profound. His three key strategies, "Don't Get Worse," "Keep Healthy Employees Healthy," and "Create a Culture of Health," can help reduce the healthcare and productivity-related costs that are bankrupting American businesses. Zero Trends: Health as a Serious Economic Strategy provides the guidance and the inspiration organizations need in their search for lower medical expenditures and higher-performing workplaces.

Book Description
The health of human populations around the world is constantly changing and the health profiles of most nations in the early twenty-first century global health landscape are unrecognizable compared with those of just a century ago. This book examines and explains these health changes and considers likely future patterns and changes. While the overall picture charted is one of progress and improvement, certain unfortunate regressions and stubbornly persistent health inequalities are equally shown to be part of the evolving patterns of global health. The chapters of the book are organized in three major parts: The first part introduces readers to the principal concepts of global health, and to the idea of populations having distinctive health profiles. In particular, it explores how those profiles can be measured, and how they change, using the umbrella concepts and theories of epidemiological and health transition. Building on the first section, the second part focuses on the evolution of health states, as well as paying particular attention to the reasons for the many subnational inequalities in global health. It also examines health challenges such as the continuing infectious disease burden and current emerging 'epidemics'. The final part transports readers from the current health scene to future possible and probable health scenarios, acknowledging the challenges presented by global environmental change, as well as issues centred around geopolitics and human security. Using clear and original explanations of complex issues, this text makes extensive use of boxed case studies and international examples, with thought-provoking discussion questions posed for readers at the end of each chapter. Global Health is essential reading for students of global health, public health and development studies.

Book Description
This book offers a systematic review of major issues and trends in health care policy, including those related to physical health and disease trends, mental and behavioral health concerns, reorganizing the U.S. health system, and managed care and health care personnel. Kronenfeld addresses the problems, challenges, issues and trends in the policies that determine the role and future of health care in the United States. Also covered are special populations, such as the elderly and children, reproductive health, and issues cost, quality, and access to care. Health care policies affect all Americans. Managed care has been a major trend in the past decade's reorganization of the U.S. health care system, yet its future is uncertain. Despite unparalleled spending and the world's most technologically sophisticated health care, measure such as life expectancy and infant mortality rates indicate that the country's health outcomes may not be the best. Mental health and behavioral health problems are major impediments to quality of life for some Americans, and roughly 17% of the population under 65 does not have insurance coverage for necessary health care services. Despite calls for a major overhaul of the U.S. health care system, incremental reform is more likely than major, comprehensive reform.

Book Description
Structural Health Management (SHM) is a key part of the Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) approach, whose main aim is to develop an integrated end-to-end system to monitor the overall health of a vehicle. Structural Health Monitoring: Current State and Future Trends, edited by Professor Alessandro Pegoretti, a scholar from the University of Trento in Italy, introduces the reader to recent developments involved in health monitoring of aerospace structures. The chapters, represented by seminal SAE International technical papers, offer an overview of the most recent advances in the sensing techniques for SHM, analysis of SHM data and its applications in aerospace. SHM can allow a continuous in-service inspection of the vehicle, thus reducing the cost associated with manual inspection at predetermined time intervals. The availability of reliable information on the loading conditions and health state of structural components by the implementation of SHM can be beneficial for several reasons, such as: • To prevent catastrophic failure • To reduce the number and the cost of unnecessary inspections • To improve the design of structural parts, with a reduction of the weight and the costs of overdesigned components Structural Health Monitoring: Current State and Future Trends offers a unique perspective on this field.

Book Description
In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
