The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will form a modern research framework of support to individuals, groups and communities of health researchers across Canada. The selection of a slate of institutes is a key part of a series of decisions that the governing council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) must make. This working paper provides advice on creating an initial slate of institutes to meet the objectives of the CIHR, based on extensive consultations and evaluation of the input from the research community & stakeholders. It begins by presenting criteria & parameters for establishing institutes and a review of the community consultation process. After a summary of community responses & key areas of consensus, section 4 describes work conducted to select an initial set of institutes and the final section outlines future initiatives to put the institutes in place. The appendix describes each of the proposed institutes, including their research areas, cross-cutting activities, and examples of potential partners.
