Zhuang Zi is not unknown in the West, but his work is not appreciated nor understood as well as it deserves to be. Perhaps that is not surprising given that his work originates from the Warring States period of ancient China (475–221 bce). Of course, his ideas are sometimes quite abstruse and not as accessible as those of Plato; nor are they suited to the Western preference for linear methods of exposition. But Zhuang Zi does reveal a remarkably sophisticated philosophical outlook; a gentle, if sometimes, provocative humour; and, incidentally, displays and affirms our common humanity despite the passage of over two thousand years. Zhuang Zi writes mainly using allegory and example. The Western preference is for complex clarity; even if, it would appear, that assumed clarity is deceptive. This new translation was undertaken because it was felt that earlier translations were not very sympathetic to Zhuang Zi’s Daoism and his latent anarchism; and they tended to smother the former in theistic concepts whilst obscuring the latter as much as they could. It is felt that this new translation brings a greater clarity to a significant number of passages. Despite any failings in this translation and interpretation, it is hoped that it will serve to introduce new readers to that remarkable Chinese classic and perhaps stimulate those already familiar with it to re-appraise certain aspects of it.

"Taiping Guangji" （太平广记） is the first collection of ancient classical Chinese documentary novels. The book has 500 volumes with 10 catalogues . It is a kind of book based on the documentary stories of the Han Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. 14 people including Li Fang, Hu Mongolian ﹑ Li Mu , Xu Xuan , Wangke Zhen , Song white , Lv Wenzhong worked under Song Taizong Emperor’s command for the compilation. It began in the second year of Taiping Xingguo (977 A.D) and was completed in the following year (978 Ad.). This book is basically a collection of ancient stories compiled by category. The book is divided into 92 categories according to the theme, and is divided into more than 150 details. The story of the gods and spirits in the book accounts for the largest proportion, such as the fifty-five volumes of the gods, the fifteen volumes of the female fairy, the twenty-five volumes of the gods, the forty volumes of the ghosts, plus the Taoism, the alchemist, the aliens, the dissidents, the interpretation and Spirit vegetation of birds and so on, basically belong to the weird story of nature, represents the mainstream of Chinese classical story. The book includes the Volume of Destinies and Inductions (Vol. 146 – 163) from Tai Ping Guang Ji.

The May Fourth Movement launched an era of turmoil and transformation in China, as Western ideas and education encroached on the Confucian traditions at the root of Chinese society. The Republican period (1919–49) witnessed an outpouring of poetry in a form and style new to China, written in the common people’s language, baihua ("plain speech"). The Twenty-Four Histories (Chinese: 二十四史) are the Chinese official historical books covering a period from 3000 BC to the Ming dynasty in the 17th century. The Han dynasty official Sima Qian established many of the conventions of the genre. Starting with the Tang dynasty, each dynasty established an official office to write the history of its predecessor using official court records. As fixed and edited in the Qing dynasty, the whole set contains 3213 volumes and about 40 million words. It is considered one of the most important sources on Chinese history and culture. The title "Twenty-Four Histories" dates from 1775 which was the 40th year in the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. This was when the last volume, the History of Min gwas reworked and a complete set of the histories produced. Autobiographical writings have been a major cultural genre from antiquity to the present time.
