Book Description
Bringing together leading European and North American experts, this timely volume answers questions about the implications and management of the new external borders of the European Union following another phase of enlargement. Implications of the EU's new external border, especially its eastern border with Russia and Ukraine, will be a key issue for the new member countries, for the EU, and for the new neighbouring regions. The contributors address this emerging question from two perspectives. They examine whether an expanded Europe will create a new dividing line in Europe between 'insiders' and 'outsiders', and also consider the concrete problems of border management and how the issues will be handled. The book will be of particular value to those concerned with European politics and the expansion of Europe, and to those with an interest in political sociology.

Book Description
During the Cold War, Soviet influence and Leninist ideology were inseparable. But the collapse of both systems threw Russian influence into limbo. In this book, James Sherr draws on his in-depth study of the country over many years to explain and analyse the factors that have brought Russian influence back into play. Today, Tsarist, Soviet and contemporary approaches combine in creative and discordant ways. The result is a policy based on a mixture of strategy, improvisation and habit. The novelty of this policy and its apparent successes pose possible dangers for Russia's neighbours, the West and Russia itself.

Book Description
Commentators distinguish between two kinds of power, ?hard? and ?soft.? The promise in this logic is obvious. Unfortunately, to date, the idea of soft power has not been subjected to a critical forensic examination. The ill consequences of America's difficulty in thinking and behaving strategically are augmented perilously when unwarranted faith is placed upon soft power that inherently resists to strategic direction. Although it is appropriate to be skeptical of the utility of soft power, this must not be interpreted as advice to threaten or resort to military force with scant reference to moral standards. Not only is it right in an absolute sense, it is also expedient to seek, seize, and hold the moral high ground. The more challenging contexts for national security will still require the mailed fist, even if it is cushioned, but not concealed, by a glove of political and ethical restraint.
