Jena wurde aus Holzasche gewonnen und war kohlensaures Kalium, Potasche; das Neter, dessen Aufbrausen beim Uebergiessen mit Essig in den Sprüchen salomonis erwähnt wird, und das luther mit Kreide übersetzte, war wohl zweifellos kohlensaures Natrium, Soda, welches Salz im Orient und im nördlichen Afrika nicht selten als Auswitterung aus stehenden Gewässern gefunden wurde. Das Wort Neter finden wir im griechischen vftpov und lateinischen niirum wieder. Dies bedeutete, wie aus einigen Stellen des plinius hervorgeht, die aus den Natron seeen Egyptens ausgewitterte Soda. Allmählich aber wurde dieser Name auf Sdpeter übertragen, und mit dem 15.jahrhundert wurde das mineralische Alkali, die Soda, um Verwechselungen zu vermeiden, mit Natrum oder Natron be.
