Book Description
Book & CD. A light-emitting-diode (LED) is a semiconductor diode that emits light when an electric current is applied in the forward direction of the device, as in the simple LED circuit. The effect is a form of electroluminescence where incoherent and narrow-spectrum light is emitted from the p-n junction.LEDs are widely used as indicator lights on electronic devices and increasingly in higher power applications such as flashlights and area lighting. An LED is usually a small area (less than 1 mm2) light source, often with optics added to the chip to shape its radiation pattern and assist in reflection. The colour of the emitted light depends on the composition and condition of the semiconducting material used, and can be infrared, visible, or ultraviolet. Besides lighting, interesting applications include using UV-LEDs for sterilisation of water and disinfection of devices, and as a grow light to enhance photosynthesis in plants. This book presents the latest research from around the globe in the field of LED research and Schottky diodes.

Book Description
Food preservation has existed since time immemorial with techniques that focused on prolonging shelf-life of food products. The current challenge, though, is to preserve food in terms of loss of nutrients, texture, and sensorial characteristics along with prolonging its shelf-life. This new volume, Nonthermal Light-Based Technologies in Food Processing, explores and provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of current and emerging light-based technologies and their application in food processing. This book also introduces the role of nonthermal technology for novel food product development. In four detailed parts, this handbook covers light-based technologies, ultraviolet (UV) light technology, pulsed light (PL) technology, and light-emitting diode (LED) technology. It details a range of modern and emerging light-based food preservation technologies that include ozone, ohmic heading, high-pressure processing, cold plasma, pulsed electric field (PEF), microwave, irradiation, light-based technologies (ultraviolet, pulsed light, light-emitting diode [LED]), supercritical fluid extraction, cold plasma, and more. Each technology is thoroughly covered, starting with an introduction and proceeding to design, applications, and quality and regulatory aspects, providing comprehensive knowledge and detailed explanations. This book will be a valuable resource on nonthermal light-based technologies in food processing for many academicians and professionals in the field of food science, food technology, and food engineering around the world. It will also act as an important reference for researchers, students, scholars, industries, universities, and research centers.

Book Description
A benchmark publication, the first edition of the Phosphor Handbook, published in 1998, set the standard for references in the field. The second edition, updated and published in 2007, began exploring new and emerging fields. However, in the last 14 years, since the second edition was published, many notable advances and broader phosphor applications have occurred. Completely revised, updated, and expanded into three separate volumes, this third edition of the Handbook covers the most recent developments in phosphor research, characterization, and applications. This volume on ‘Fundamentals of Luminescence’ elucidates the theoretical background and fundamental properties of luminescence as applied to solid-state phosphor materials. The book includes the chapters that cover: Basic principles of luminescence, the principal phosphor materials, and their optical properties New developments in principal phosphors in nitrides, perovskite, and silicon carbide Revised lanthanide level locations and its impact on phosphor performance Detailed descriptions of energy transfer and upconversion processes in bulk and nanoscaled particles and core-shell structures Rapid developing organic and polymer luminescent materials and devices

Book Description
Arthropods as pests in crops, vectors of diseases, pollinators, and natural enemies of pests are of huge economic importance. They affect livestock, human health and food supplies around the world. This unique book examines and reviews how light and colour can be used to enhance pest management in agricultural and medical applications by manipulating the optical responses of arthropods. Arthropods use optical cues to find food, oviposition sites and to navigate. Light also regulates their diurnal and seasonal activities. Plants use optical cues to attract or deter various species of arthropod. In this book, an international team of experts show how light can be used successfully to attract, arrest, confuse and deter arthropods as well as to disrupt their biological clocks.
