Book Description
Originally published in 1999, David Ludden's book offers a comprehensive historical framework for understanding the regional diversity of agrarian South Asia. Adopting a long-term view of history, it treats South Asia not as a single civilization territory, but rather as a patchwork of agrarian regions, each with their own social, cultural and political histories. The discussion begins during the first millennium, when farming communities displaced pastoral and tribal groups, and goes on to consider the development of territoriality from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Subsequent chapters consider the emergence of agrarian capitalism in village societies under the British, and demonstrate how economic development in contemporary South Asia continues to reflect the influence of agrarian localism. As a comparative synthesis of the literature on agrarian regimes in South Asia, the book promises to be a valuable resource for students of agrarian and regional history as well as of comparative world history.

Book Description
The term 'development has generated considerable academic interest and unending debate among scholars from several disciplines. At a time whe the intellectual climate is marked by a lack of consensus on the term, this book sets forht a modified model of development at the micro-level- amodel in which culture is placed on the highest pedastal and evaluation provides the key to success. The book is the result of an indepth fieldwork carried out by the author among the Konds of Phullbani district of Orissa. The 'target oriented' approach of the government agencies has made them over inclined towards statistics in the formulation and implementation of development programmes neglecting the socio-cultural factors. This has resulted in a myopic development; the government's offer, in terms of development; the government's offer, in terms of developmental assistance, has either been rejected or at best evoked lukewarm response. The author proposes that the planners must use a cultural lens to devise development programmes, other wise development woult continue to be myopic.

Book Description
While the Constitution of India provides for equality of status to all the citizens, it also recognises the neen for special provisions in favour of the socially disadvantaged groups with the objective of bringing them to a level comparable to the other communities. Based on the thesis of the author's doctoral research, the present volume examines the impact of the policy of compensatory discrimination and the various constitutional provisions aimed at giving preferential treatment to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes especially with regard to the provision of resevation of jobs in the public services. The author analyses the degree of social transformation achieved dure to the implementation of the policy of reservation in the public services among the SC's and ST's with particular reference to the State of Bihar. Many significant findings have emerged out of the study. The beneficiaries of reservation have not only broken away from their traditional occupations but have also become examples for members of their communities in view of their power, prestigve and self-confidence vis-ý-vis members of the upper castes. Induction in to the government services has given a fillip to these communities to contribute actively in the development process. The volume also examines the implementation of the policy of reservation and the change that has occurred in the semi-feudal society of Bihar. The book contains valuable suggestions towards ensuring effective administration of the reservation policy. These deserve the attention of policy-makers, academicians and administrators engaged in the task of bringing about social change through constitutional means.
