Book Description
The Gypsy minority has had a rough path throughout history, and by an unusual turn in this road, a number found themselves in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. By and large, their cultural practices and unwillingness to conform to social norms caused European countries to take drastic measures against Gypsies. In many cases, they were deported to the New World. Traveling with county fairs and carnivals, they made their way to the White Mountains, finding a niche for their fortunetelling practices. They became entertainers and made their livings off palm readings, card readings, their musical talents and even gazing into crystal balls. Gypsies have been misjudged and persecuted throughout history, but their romantic traditions and ideals have greatly been overlooked. Historian Bruce Heald delves into the fascinating history of a stereotyped minority and presents the poetry of their wanderings in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Book Description
When Ladislav Holy precipitately left Czechoslovakia for the UK in 1968 he was already one of the leading anthropologists in Central Europe. In the following decades he made important field studies in Africa. Since 1986 he has been engaged in research in the Czech Republic, and he brings to this timely study of national identity the skills of a seasoned researcher, a cosmopolitan perspective, and the insights of an insider. Drawing on historical and literary sources as well as ethnography, he analyses Czech discourses on national identity. He argues that there were specifically 'Czech' aspects to the communist regime and to the 'velvet revolution', and paying particular attention to symbolic representations of what it means to be Czech, he explores how notions of Czech identity were involved in the debates surrounding the fall of communism, and the emergence of a new social system.

Book Description
"During the Second World War, Xan Fielding served for two years as an officer in the British Special Operations Executive on German-occupied Crete, where he ran an intelligence network in co-operation with the Cretan resistance movement. Seven years later, Fielding returned to Crete to spend a year travelling in the island's White Mountains (the "stronghold" of the title), revisiting sites of his wartime exploits and seeking out former comrades who had returned to their peacetime lives. His sojourn resulted in this remarkable memoir, a documentary-like record of days spent among Cretan peasants blended with history and literature -- a travelogue like no other. The Stronghold is a blending of "history and culture with experience, but one wedded to fidelity. Fielding never arrives; there is no great journey of self. There is just a question answered about the war and youth ... he can't shake Crete, as no man can shake the formative experience of his youth." -- from the new foreword by Robert Messenger
