Adrift on an Ice-pan
Author: Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell
Publisher: Boston : Houghton Mifflin
ISBN:
Category : Adventure stories, Labradorean
Languages : en
Pages : 126
Book Description
Dr. Wilfred Grenfell's harrowing tale of near-death on the ice of northern Newfoundland. How does a man save his own life? In 1908 Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, a medical missionary in northern Newfoundland, was traveling by dog team to treat a patient. In his haste Grenfell took a short cut across the sea ice. A change of wind and ice conditions left the doctor and his sled dogs stranded on an ice pan, their komatik and provisions lost. Grenfell came close to perishing. Adrift on an ice pan is Grenfell's own account of this near-fatal misadventure. He survived dauntingly cold and seemingly hopeless conditions through an inventive presence of mind and by sacrificing and skinning three of his sled dogs to clothe himself against the elements. Because of his tenacity and quick thinking, and that of his rescuers, Grenfell endured.

Sites of Communication

Book Description
""Sites of Communication: The Grenfell Mission of Newfoundland and Labrador" constitutes an unconventional "media" history of the Grenfell Mission. In the North Atlantic imagination, Dr. Wilfred Grenfell and the medical mission that took his name are little-known episodes in imperial history. In recent literature, Grenfell is seen to an ever greater extent as a social reformer who, for better and for worse, "intervened to change the patterns of living" in northern Newfoundland and Labrador (Rompkey 1991: xiv). The mission he worked to establish, culminating in the incorporation of the International Grenfell Association (IGA) in 1914, was an organization that would eventually oversee the construction and functioning of hospitals, nursing stations, schools, orphanages, cooperative stores, and light industries, amongst other institutional types, becoming a vast northern health network that the IGA ran until, in 1981, it was finally transferred over to provincial control. Known as Grenfell Regional Health Services, it merged with Health Labrador Corporation in 2005 to create the Labrador-Grenfell Regional Health Authority.Drawing on the field-defining work of political economist and communication theorist Harold Innis, my dissertation examines the various material and immaterial mediations that the Grenfell Mission brought to this supposedly remote region of the world. It is a scholarly contribution to the fields of communication studies, architectural theory and history, and historical inquiry in a broad sense that expands what we normally consider as "media" of communication to include the practices and technologies of aerial surveying, early forms and ideologies of cooperative finance, the introduction of new preventative medical techniques, and the appearance of reinforced concrete in imperial building practices, amongst a host of others. One of its secondary aims is to reconsider the relationship between "natural" resources and their associated human practices. By siting communication as a social process, I address those histories of communication in North America that see it as the story of ever greater and ever increasing connectivity. In my story, isolation can bring its own forms of environmental mediation." --
