Book Description
Historians of Technology have failed to include the larger contribution and influence of Ctesibius’ compressor-driven Hydraulis with its pneumatic pumps, keyboard, and organ pipes in the path of critical preparatory events leading up to the ‘Latent’ Industrial Revolution. One should also realize that Ctesibius had all the parts and sub-assemblies on hand to invent the first Steam Hydraulis or Calliope, as illustrated on the front book cover of this work. From the 'Fertile Crescent' of the Persian Empire to the Hellenistic Library of Alexandria, Vitruvius writing brought the Hydraulis to the Abbey of St. Gall in 1414 during the Renaissance. Its path then took it through Italy, Germany, and the Paris of Louis XIV along the Arch of Industrial Reawakening. This was the Hydraulis 2-millennium path from Antiquity to its return reigniting the 'Latent' Industrial Revolution.

Book Description
"Spanning a half-century, the 90 evocative photographs in this volume crystallize the essence of America. Reproduced directly from the originals, they preserve forever the Steeplechase Amusement Park in Coney Island (1940), a memorable first day of school in New York City (1950), Stan Musial and the 1951 St. Louis Cardinals, the vitality of John F. Kennedy (1961), the ideal of small-town life, the changing South, the sweeping natural beauty of the West and striking images of presidents from Franklin Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan. The product of Rothstein's more than 45 years as a photojournalist, this stirring anthology is an affirmation of faith in America. It is also a testament to the photographer's artistry and versatility. Hailed by critics at home and abroad, Rothstein's vignettes of daily life, his revealing portraits, breathtaking landscapes, and thought provoking still lifes raise documentary photography to a fine art. His photographs, masterly in their sense of design and composition, are in the permanent collections of major museums, and exhibitions of his works have been presented at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the International Museum of Photography, Rochester; the Royal Photographic Society, London; and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris"--Back cover.

Book Description
This volume picks up where The Great Opera Stars in Historic Photographs left off. It is a record covering the postwar years to the present. Although most of the great stars of recent years will be found here, limitations of space and availability of photographs were also factors determining inclusion. With a few important exceptions, duplication of singers represented in the earlier volume has been avoided. - Introduction.

Book Description
No story in United States history is more compelling than the exploration and settlement of the American West, and the tales of those who blazed the trails will forever enthrall Americans yet unborn. In Historic Photos of Heroes of the Old West, the dauntless adventurers who gave us the legend come alive together in profile. Herein are the early pathfinders Zebulon Pike and Lewis and Clark, James Marshall and men of the gold rush, the lawmen Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill Hickok. George Armstrong Custer returns to the Little Big Horn and John Wesley Powell revisits the Colorado River. And Mark Twain, Buffalo Bill, and Charles Russell breathe the legend to life. A sagely written brush with the lore and romance of the Old West, this roundup of the most famous frontiersmen includes nearly 200 photographs, reproduced vividly in black-and-white, with captions and introductions by author and historian Mike Cox. Here are the fables and the faces of Americans double-tough, for every adventurer seeking an encounter with the great American West.

Book Description
How are conductors' silent gestures magicked into sound by a group of more than a hundred brilliant but belligerent musicians? The mute choreography of great conductors has fascinated and frustrated musicians and music-lovers for centuries. Orchestras can be inspired to the heights of musical and expressive possibility by their maestros, or flabbergasted that someone who doesn't even make a sound should be elevated to demigod-like status by the public. This is the first book to go inside the rehearsal rooms of some of the most inspirational orchestral partnerships in the world - how Simon Rattle works at the Berlin Philharmonic, how Mariss Jansons deals with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, and how Claudio Abbado creates the world's most luxurious pick-up band every year with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. From London to Budapest, Bamberg to Vienna, great orchestral concerts are recreated as a collection of countless human and musical stories.
