Book Description
Rubber compounding is a well known industrial process to improve rubber's mechanical properties. To improve the interaction between the polar fillers such as lignin, carbon black (CB) and silica and the non-polar rubber matrix, coupling agents bridge the gap. Lignin, an amorphous polyphenolic material derived from wood and a by-product of the pulp and paper industry, has been investigated as a reinforcing agent. Arene-perfluoroarene interactions between electron-rich lignin and electron-deficient pentafluorostyrene (PFS) in poly(butadiene-graft-pentafluorostyrene) (PB-g-PPFS) lead to improved strength and a reduction in rolling resistance. Applying the same concept to CB-filled rubber, there was an improvement in the cure rate and a 13% reduction in the rolling resistance. Trialkoxy(4-vinylphenethyl)silane (StSi(OR)3) monomers were synthesized to incorporate into the PB graft copolymer with PFS as a coupling agent for compounds using silica and carbon black as the reinforcing agents. 1H, 13C, 29Si-DEPT and 2D NMR spectroscopy was used to characterize the trialkoxy(4-vinylphenethyl)silane monomers to determine the para and meta isomeric products. Conventional radical polymerizations were used to synthesize homopolymers of the triethoxy(4-vinylphenethyl)silane (StSi(OEt)3), tripropoxy(4-vinylphenethyl)silane (StSi(OPr)3) and (dodecyloxy)diethoxy(4-vinylphenethyl)silane (StSi(ODod)(OEt)2). Copolymers of PFS and the trialkoxy(4-vinylphenethyl)silanes were synthesized to calibrate the GPC UV detector at 254 nm. Graft copolymerizations of PFS and the StSi(OR)3 monomers onto PB were characterized by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy and GPC analysis to determine molecular weight, monomer conversion, and the grafting parameters. The grafting parameters were calculated using the UV detector calibration curves of the P(PFS-co-StSi(OR)3) copolymers. Styrene and the StSi(OR)3 monomers, in a 70:30 molar ratio of styrene:StSi(OR)3, were copolymerized using RAFT polymerization. The broad molecular weight distribution observed shows evidence of hydrolysis and condensation of the trialkoxysilane moiety. The P(St-co-StSi(ODod)(OEt)2) copolymer had the smallest molecular weight distribution shoulder compared to the P(St-co-StSi(OEt)3) and P(St-co-StSi(OPr)3). The GPC data followed the trend of the hydrolytic stability. The P(St-co-StSi(OEt)3) had the most broad dispersity, then the P(St-co-StSi(OPr)3) and the P(St-co-StSi(ODod)(OEt)2) with the least amount of hydrolysis and condensation coupling shown in the GPC chromatogram.

Book Description
Renowned experts give all essential aspects of the techniques and applications of graft copolymers based on polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are the most abundant natural organic materials and polysaccharide based graft copolymers are of great importance and widely used in various fields. Natural polysaccharides have recently received more attention due to their advantages over synthetic polymers by being non-toxic, biodegradable and available at low cost. Modification of polysaccharides through graft copolymerization improves the properties of polysaccharides. Grafting is known to improve the characteristic properties of the backbones. Such properties include water repellency, thermal stability, flame resistance, dye-ability and resistance towards acid-base attack and abrasion. Polysaccharides and their graft copolymers find extensive applications in diversified fields. Applications of modified polysaccharides include drug delivery devices, controlled release of fungicides, selective water absorption from oil-water emulsions, purification of water etc.

Book Description
Block polymers represent another milestone in the preparation of polymers of controlled structure. Catalysts and polymerization methods that allowed the preparation of polymers in which the stereo- and geometric isomerism of the monomer units could be con trolled have indeed been among the major developments in polymer science during the last decade. The synthesis of block polymers, in which the sequence length of the comonomer units can be con trolled, portends equally important developments in the science and technology of polymers. The papers collected in this volume cover primarily the pro ceedings of the most recent symposium on block polymers, sponsored by the Division of Polymer Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. It was held in New York City during the Society's 158th National Meeting in September, 1969. Additional contributions from selected authors were invited especially for this book to achieve the most up-to-date account of the advances that have been made since the development of the thermoplastic elastomers that first brought into focus this important area of research. The first two papers in this volume draw attention to the various problems that should be considered in the preparation of block polymers of precisely defined structure from styrene and butadiene or isoprene by anionic polymerization. Characterization of block polymers presents many problems and there is a paucity of systematic work in this area. Attention has been given to the di lute solution properties of block polymers, however, in one of the papers in this volume.
