Book Description
Excerpt from A Spelling Book After interest in a word has been aroused, the child's mind must be concentrated upon the peculiarity of its spelling and appealed to through all possible avenues, the eye, the ear, and the hand. So clear and strong should be the image formed that it becomes individual, even personal. For this reason, words included in this book have not been classified after the ace, mace, lace fashion, but have been purposely distributed so that each new word invites to fresh attack. There is no less authority for this mode of procedure than William T. Harris, who says that spelling lists should be arranged so as not to bring together a number of words of the same combination, and thereby paralyze the memory, as is too frequently the case in the lists given in spelling-books which, for example, collect in one lesson the words ending in tion, or tain, or ture, or ctous, etc., thus giving the pupil by the first word that is spelled a key to all that follow. In the first grade, however, there is a list of words containing the fundamental phonograms for ear training. The words in the book have not been syllabicated for two reasons that the child's image of the new word may be a unit, and that he may master it more thoroughly by analyzing it for himself. Especial attention is called to the exercises in construction which offer the child a larger practice in the ultimate use to which spelling is put that of composition. They are planned to correlate with the child's life at home and at school and to give him, as need arises, the spelling for particular words. (see index on pages xiii and xiv, also Suggestions to Teachers.) It is believed that in each case the lists of words will be found to include not only words requiring drill, but also words that will lead to a fuller life and a choicer diction. It is certainly desirable for a child to associate modest demeanor, self-control, and august presence with Washington; patience. Book Description
Excerpt from Heath's Graded Spelling Book: For Graded and Ungraded Schools The use of this book may be begun during the first school year, as the words in section one will' not be found too difficult for pupils who have completed a primer. Although our language is not entirely phonetic, it has a large proportion of words that have phonetic elements common to some other words, and which require treat ment in groups during the early stages of word study. In this book words having vowel sounds in common are presented very early in groups. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Graded List of Common Words Difficult to Spell Many thoughtful educators agree on the following points with regard to spelling: - 1. That numerous difficult words are so unusual that one may be pardoned reference to a dictionary on the rare occasions when he needs to use them. It is a waste of a child's mental energy to make him learn to spell words like chameleon and adipocere, as long as he spells which with at and together with an a. 2. That many words are so easy that they may be learned from general reading by the process of unconscious absorption. 3. That words should be arranged "so as not to bring together a number of words of the same combination, and thereby," as W. T. Harris, United States Commissioner of Education, well says, "paralyze the memory, as is too frequently the case in the lists given in spelling-books, which, for example, collect in one lesson the words ending in tion or tain, or ture, or cious, etc., thus giving to the pupil by the first word that is spelled a key to all that follow." Words of the same combination of letters can be learned, no doubt, in a short time, but school examinations show that by this arrangement no lasting impression is made on the mind. This limited, basal vocabulary Of 3600 words should be supplemented to meet the special needs Of different groups Of children. Near the end Of the book for Higher Grades (pages 49 - 54) are lists Of words for rural, urban, and industrial communities from which such words may be chosen. Book Description
Excerpt from The Jones Spelling Book, Vol. 1: Grades Two, Three and FourIf there is any subject in the common school whose teaching has been a disappointment to teachers themselves, that subject is spelling. In spite of new and improved methods of teaching spelling, in spite of more time spent upon spelling, and in spite of efforts to reform English spelling, students throughout the eight grades of our public schools continue to disappoint us in their spelling. Then, too, the high school graduate seems as likely as ever to mar his thesis by frequent misspelling; the letters of business men are far from satisfactory in spelling; and, finally, the college graduate continues to show us that he is by no means a master of spelling. This is a formidable array of evidence against our teaching of spelling, and from every quarter comes the cry, What is the matter with our spelling teaching? The answer to this question may come from either or both of two sources; namely, (1) our spelling material, or word lists, may be at fault, and (2) our methods of teaching these lists may be bad. But when we note the different methods that have been used in teaching spelling in the last few years, and apparently with no great difference in ultimate success, it would seem that it is time for us to investigate our spelling material. Are the spelling lists which we are giving our students good or bad? Are these lists made up of words which children actually use, grade for grade, in their own free written speech? Or are they full of words which are as far beyond these children as our reading and arithmetic materials once were? It is this significant question that prompted the author of this book to conduct an eight years' research in the field of spelling material. Since this spelling book is based on the results of that research, a brief description of the same is here given.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A New Graded Spelling-Book: A Complete Course in Spelling for Schools and Academies Diacritical marks have been very little used, because they change the pictures of words as they are usually seen, and because it has been found in practice that pupils pay very slight attention to them. In the syllabication and pronunciation of the words found in this book reference has usually been made to Webster's Dictionary.
