I consider to have been at that time the most representative of the two broadly differing, if not Opposed, conceptions of America's position in the foreign affairs of the world, John Hay and Charles Eliot Norton. Book Description
Although common wisdom and much scholarship assume that "big government" gained its foothold in the United States under the auspices of the New Deal during the Great Depression, in fact it was the Second World War that accomplished this feat. Indeed, as the federal government mobilized for war it grew tenfold, quickly dwarfing the New Deal's welfare programs. Warfare State shows how the federal government vastly expanded its influence over American society during World War II. Equally important, it looks at how and why Americans adapted to this expansion of authority. Through mass participation in military service, war work, rationing, price control, income taxation, and the war bond program, ordinary Americans learned to live with the warfare state. They accepted these new obligations because the government encouraged all citizens to think of themselves as personally connected to the battle front, linking their every action to the fate of the combat soldier. As they worked for the American Soldier, Americans habituated themselves to the authority of the government. Citizens made their own counter-claims on the state-particularly in the case of industrial workers, women, African Americans, and most of all, the soldiers. Their demands for fuller citizenship offer important insights into the relationship between citizen morale, the uses of patriotism, and the legitimacy of the state in wartime. World War II forged a new bond between citizens, nation, and government. Warfare State tells the story of this dramatic transformation in American life.

Book Description
Excerpt from Government and the War The reader who has followed me thus far can see for himself whether I have described the situation as it really is. I know that many people will not face it. It seems to them too awful. They would rather shut their eyes and build castles in the air labelled 'after the War.' That seems to me the unconscious hypocrisy of despair. I have faith in my country men. Nay, more, I have faith in the French and I have faith in the Italians. But it is for my own countrymen that I am writing. I am sure that they feel with me and that they want to know the worst and to do the best. All that is required is a lead. Book Description
Introductions by Mauriel P Joslyn and JH Segars. In today's society we are unaccustomed to writings as bold and direct as those penned by Mildred Lewis Rutherford (1851-1928). The surviving papers of this Georgia educator provide an interpretation of Civil War History that is rarely found in modern texts. "Truths of History," first published in 1920, is an extraordinary presentation of historical viewpoints held by Southerners, past and present. Also included in this reprint is "Wrongs of History Righted," a fiery lecture given by Rutherford in 1914 in Savannah. Miss "Millie" Rutherford's insight into the mindset of Southerners is both fascinating and provocative. Few scholars were more keenly aware of the heart, mind and soul of the Confederate soldier than was this national orator and Grand Historian of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
