The BNL/CCNY collaboration has increased the statistics on the reaction 22 GeV/c .pi.−p .-->. phi phi n from 1203 to approx. = 4000 events. A preliminary partial wave analysis yields three states, all with J/sup PC/ = 2+, which we conclude are produced by glueballs. Previously we had two such states, both with J/sup PC/ = 2/sup + +/. The data analysis, and the QCD arguments for these states being produced by glueballs will be presented and discussed.

The current favorite candidate theory of strong interactions is Quantum Chromodynamics. In this theory, bound states of two or more gluons, called glueballs, must exist. Experimentally, the detection of glueballs (all of which are massive enough to decay quickly to ordinary q anti q hadrons) is complicated by the lack of any explicit signature. The calculation of the mass of the low-lying glueballs by lattice gauge methods and the MIT bag model at present give only a rough guide to experimental searches. A popular place to look has been among the systems recoiling from photons emitted in heavy quarkonium decays. In general, processes which must exchange hard gluons are needed. One touchstone seems to be the concept of democracy. Unmixed glueball states are flavor singlets and should show equal decay amplitudes to states made of strange or non-strange quarks (or indeed of charmed or b quarks at higher masses). The MPS Experiment number 679 setup and results are described.

We have obtained 1203 events of the reaction .pi.− .-->. phi phi n at 22 GeV/c over a small background (approx. 10%). As in our prior experiment the OZI suppression was essentially entirely absent. A partial wave analysis allowing waves up to J = 4 and L = 3 demonstrated that a good fit was obtained with 2 waves, each well described by a Breit-Wigner resonance. The addition of another wave one at a time in turn, resulted in no statistical significance for the wave. Because of the complete breakdown of the OZI suppression, and other characteristics of the data, these two resonances are strong glueball candidates. All the quantum numbers were determined and are given together with the masses and widths. The glueball candidates given provide strong evidence for one or more primary glueballs in this mass region.
