Book Description
Excerpt from A Glossary of Words and Phrases: Usually Regarded as Peculiar to the United States Having found the case to be as stated, I had next to decide between a vocabulary of words of purely American origin, or one in which should be embraced all those words usual] y called provincial or vulgar - all the words, whatever be their origin, which are used in familiar conversation, and but seldom em ployed in composition - all the perversions of language, and abuses of words into which people, in certain sections of the country, have fallen, and some of those remarkable and ludi croas forms of speech which have been adopted in the Western States. The latter plan seemed the most satisfactory, and this I determined to adopt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland The English language has no equivalent to the vowel sound in the way the word brust (burst) is pronounced. It is not the u, the 3, nor the i, but a kind of compromise between the e and the i. The word run is in a similar predicament, it being frequently pronounced in a half-way sound between win and ran, and partly approaching to ren, but not strictly coinciding with the sound of any of them. Book Description
Excerpt from Select Glossary: Of English Words Used Formerly in Senses Different From Their Present And as I owe nothing to these ms. Collections, in valuable help as I have no doubt they would have rendered, so next to nothing in the way of citation to any other source. This value I may claim for my book, that it is with the very most triļ¬‚ing exceptions an entirely independent and original collection of passages illustrative of the history of our language. Of my citations, I believe about a thousand in all, I may owe some twenty at the most to existing Diction aries or Glossaries, to Nares, or Johnson, or Todd, or Richardson. In perhaps some twenty cases more I have lighted upon and selected a passage by one of them selected before, and have not thought it desira ble, or have not found it possible, to choose some other in its room. These excepted, the collection is entire ly independent of all those which have previously been made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Dictionary of Americanisms: A Glossary of Words and Phrases Usually Regarded as Peculiar the United States The first edition of this Dictionary was published in New York in 1848. It met with a quick sale, and soon passed out of print. Aware of its many imperfections, I began my preparations for a new edition before it had fully left the press. From that time to the day the last sheets of this edition left my hands for the printer, now ten years, I have been more or less occupied in its preparation. Nearly three years of this period I spent in the interior of the country, in the service of the United States as Commissioner on the Mexican Boundary; but even there, I failed not to note the peculiarities of the familiar language of the frontier, and carefully recorded the words and phrases I met with for future use. This experience enabled me to collect the singular words occurring in prairie and frontier life as well as those com mon to Texas, New Mexico, and California. Most of these have come from the Spanish, and are now fairly engrafted on our language. The other alterations and improvements made in this edition, consist in the addition of a very large number Of words and phrases peculiar to the United States; so that it now contains probably twice as many as the first edition. The examples or illustrations from authors, showing the use of words, have also been greatly multiplied. This seemed desirable, as exam ples convey a far more correct idea of their meaning and use than a simple definition. The. Histories of words and their definitions have also been corrected and improved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
