This book gathers contributions addressing issues related to the analysis of composite structures, whose most relevant common thread is augmented numerical efficiency, which is more accurate for given computational costs than existing methods and methodologies. It first presents structural theories to deal with the anisotropy of composites and to embed multifield and nonlinear effects to extend design capabilities and provide methods of augmenting the fidelity of structural theories and lowering computational costs, including the finite element method. The second part of the book focuses on damage analysis; the multiscale and multicomponent nature of composites leads to extremely complex failure mechanisms, and predictive tools require physics-based models to reduce the need for fitting and tuning based on costly and lengthy experiments, and to lower computational costs; furthermore the correct monitoring of in-service damage is decisive in the context of damage tolerance. The objective of this research was to determine the physical response, including material failure, of a curved composite panel designed to resist transverse loading. The cause of the material failure, in the form of delamination, fiber and/or matrix failure, was determined through various criterion based on non-linear movement using a finite element analysis technique. Data generated both with and without the addition of progressive failure criteria, was compared with previously published experimental data, noting where the theory diverges from the experimental results. The inclusion of various failure criterion, to include maximum stress, Lee, and Hashin, provided a more realistic representation of the total physical response of the shell. Once an approximate range of accurate physical representation was realized, progressive failure of composite sandwich shells under transverse loading were examined. Results of the analytic comparison with the published experimental data indicate that the SLR theory overpredicts the stiffness of the various shells for both the cases considering and not considering failure criteria. Furthermore, matrix failure patterns predicted by all three criterion were similar to the experimental results. Core failures predicted in the composite sandwich analysis were similar between the failure criterion.

An overview of the virtual crack closure technique is presented. The approach used is discussed, the history summarized, and insight into its applications provided. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.

A simple test specimen configuration is proposed to evaluate the bond strength between a skin and secondarily bonded or co-cured stringer or frame when the dominant loading in the skin is flexure along the edge of the frame. The specimen consists of a flange bonded onto a skin, loaded either in a three- or four-point bending test fixture. Two configurations for the flange termination were examined, either square-ended or with a 20° taper. Observations show that failure initiates at the tip of the frame flange, either in the adhesive or in the topmost skin ply. Loads at which failure initiates were recorded, as well as the load at which a delamination propagates along the skin/flange interface. Detailed finite element models were built to examine the stress distribution in that critical area. Two failure modes were considered, failure in the adhesive material due to maximum tensile stress and formation of transverse cracks in the skin topmost ply due to maximum transverse principal tensile stress. When applying the experimentally measured failure initiation loads onto the finite element models, results show that the calculated transverse stress in the top skin ply is very close to the transverse strength of a unidirectional tape ply for all the configurations tested. Results also show that the stress levels in the adhesive are almost identical for all the configurations tested.
