Book Description
Excerpt from German Trade and the War, Commercial and Industrial Conditions, in War Time and the Future Outlook Sir: There is submitted herewith a report on German trade and the war, by Chauncey Depew Snowv Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, and J. J. Krai, of the research division of the Bureau. This report takes up the question of the foreign trade of Germany where " German Foreign-Trade Organization," Miscellaneous Series No. 57, issued in 1917, left off. It discusses industrial and commercial conditions in Germany since the outbreak of the war, covering the manufacturing industries, the supplies of raw materials, the development of substitute materials, labor, combination and syndication of industry, and present markets. It contains some information concerning transportation conditions, the railroads, rivers and canals, and ocean shipping. This report also touches briefly on some of the broader subjects of Germany's commercial aims in going to war, and aspirations and preparations for the period after the war. Whereas in the previous report, "German Foreign-Trade Organization," detailed statistical and other information was given concerning the export trade, in the present report special attention is devoted to the subject of raw materials and the import trade. There are many topics here touched on which suggest the possibilities of future detailed treatment and very extensive research; for example, such topics as the effect of the war on the merchant shipping of Germany, and the extent of the loss to the German export trade by liquidation of German concerns in foreign countries. The facilities for such research and detailed treatment are not now available. It is realized that some of the topics discussed are treated m a fragmentary fashion, and that the discussion of some topics, such as plans and preparations for the future, are little more than a reproduction of the published views of some of the German economists and other men in public life. No apology is needed for the presentation of the material in its present form. Mr. Snow and Mr. Krai have followed such important newspapers, periodicals, and books published in Germany and all the other European countries as have been available in the Department. Book Description
Excerpt from Germany's Commercial Grip on the World: Her Business Methods Explained The war which Germany has let loose on the world sets before the public opinion of Europe a question which seemed to have been reserved, up to these last few years, for the study of economists or historians. How the poor Germany of 1870, with scarcely a place in economic geography, has risen in some forty years to become one of the great forces of the world; how - borrowing the saying of Prince Frederick Charles on the eve of Metz - she has succeeded in supplementing her victory on the field of battle by conquests in the industrial arena - these are phenomena which demand the close consideration of men of affairs, commercial and industrial. With her of external trade, the German Empire occupied on the eve of war a position and in importance among mercantile States, with the fit place held by England. She had become the second largest producer of pig-iron and iron, exceeding even the out put of England, while as a producer of steel she was again the second largest in the world. Her merchant marine, inferior to that of France in 1870, was in 1913 outnumbered only by those of England and the United States. Book Description
Excerpt from Problems of Labor and Industry in Germany: Special Report Number 15 September, 1920 Authoritative information with regard to industrial conditions In Germany 13 not generally available In the United States. Events on the political stage have tended to crowd out events of important economic significance. Furthermore, much of the information regarding condi tions in Germany that has found its way into newspapers and magazines has been colored, more or less, by prejudice in favor of or opposed to Germany. The economic phases of a nation' s life are fundamental. A nation's industries are its people' S strength. During the war, each of the belligerents recognized that its factories constituted its second line of defense and that the supremacy of the military arm rested largely on the effectiveness of the industrial arm. Since the war, there has been a growing appreciation among the nations that their factories are the keystone of their economic and social well-being. The eagerness with which the nations in the invaded area have set about to rebuild the factories destroyed is only proof of this. The present industrial Situation in Germany is therefore of more than ordinary interest. At the outbreak of the war, in 1914, Germany was generally regarded as one of the leading industrial nations in Europe. Her technical skill was admired the world over. As a producer and trader, she was a nation to be reckoned with. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
