Book Description
"Gerhard Richter (1932) is certainly one of the most important artists of our time. His works are featured in all of the leading museums and collections around the world. Yet these kinds of superlatives hardly do justice to the artist's work. This publication features over eighty works from important private collections, including the artist's own, and thus provides a concise overview of a career spanning over forty years - which not only reflects the history of postwar Germany, but also the medium of painting."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
Over the course of his acclaimed 60-year career, Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) has employed both representation and abstraction as a means of reckoning with the legacy, collective memory, and national sensibility of post–WWII Germany, in both broad and very personal terms. This handsomely designed book spans the artist’s rich and varied oeuvre from the early 1960s to the present, including photo paintings, portraits, large-scale abstract series, and works on glass. Essays by leading experts on the artist illuminate Richter’s preoccupation with painting in relation to other modes of representation, and emphasize the ongoing importance of the medium’s formal and conceptual possibilities in contemporary art.

Book Description
For Gerhard Richter, creating intimate works on paper enables him to establish a reflective distance from his painterly ceuvre. It is not coincidental that there is an increased output of watercolors precisely when Richter's painterly work shifts directions. For example, when Richter began to paint abstract pictures and experiment with different themes, we see during this period the appearance of his first abstract watercolors, a different scale and medium that provides a base from which his larger paintings can play off of, and vice versa. This book includes over 100 color reproductions of these paintings, as well as a discussion between the artist and Dieter Schwartz examining the thematics of his work.

Book Description
By uniquely treating Gerhard Richter?s entire oeuvre as a single subject, Darryn Ansted combines research into Richter?s first art career as a socialist realist with study of his subsequent decisions as a significant contemporary artist. Analysis of Richter?s East German murals, early work, lesser known paintings, and destroyed and unfinished pieces buttress this major re-evaluation of Richter?s other well known but little understood paintings. By placing the reader in the artist?s studio and examining not only the paintings but the fraught and surprising decisions behind their production, Richter?s methodology is deftly revealed here as one of profound yet troubled reflection on the shifting identity, culture and ideology of his period. This rethinking of Richter?s oeuvre is informed by salient analyses of influential theorists, ranging from Theodor Adorno to Slavoj ?i?ek, as throughout, meticulous visual analysis of Richter?s changing aesthetic strategies shows how he persistently attempts to retrace the border between an objective reality structured by ideology and his subjective experience as a contemporary painter in the studio. Its innovative combination of historical accuracy, philosophical depth and astute visual analysis will make this an indispensible guide for both new audiences and established scholars of Richter?s painting.

Book Description
For Gerhard Richter (born 1932), the category of drawing covers a multitude of techniques, including graphite, ballpoint, ink, colored ink and watercolor on paper. Throughout his career, drawings have appeared in series that sometimes only consist of a few works: in the 1960s, representational and mechanical drawings from projected photographs; in the 1970s, abstract drawings; in the 1980s, drawings of people and objects; and in the 1990s, both figurative and abstract ink drawings. Nonetheless, Richter notoriously once expressed disdain for drawing's vaunted guarantee of authenticity and virtuosity--in part from his insistent and complete commitment to painting. Drawing therefore sits at a fascinating angle to his painting, and provides an arena for aspects of his thinking that rarely surface in his painting. Lines Which Do Not Exist was published for the artist's Fall 2010 exhibition at The Drawing Center in New York--his first overview in a public institution in New York since 40 Years of Painting at The Museum of Modern Art (2002). It presents more than 50 color reproductions of graphite, watercolor and ink on paper drawings made by Richter over a period of five decades, from 1966 to 2005.
