Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Writings of George Buchanan The intellectual endowments of George Buchanan reflect the highest splendour on the land of his nativity; and every scholar who derives his origin from the same country, is bound to cherish and revere his memory. Nor is his reputation confined to his native soil, and to the sister kingdoms; he has received the homage of every learned nation of Europe. The most fastidious of his cotemporaries recognized him as the prince of poets: and by a rare felicity of genius which yet remains without a parallel, he attained to the same preeminence as a writer of prose. Book Description
Excerpt from Vernacular Writings of George Buchanan Cal value of their own; but their chief interest lies in the fact that they are the finest specimens we possess of vernacular Scottish prose. In no other writer, who has used the Scottish tongue as his instrument, have we the same combination of natural gifts with the disciplined skill of the literary artist, which we find in Buchanan. Book Description
Excerpt from George Buchanan The concluding chapter of the book I intended to serve the purpose of prologue and epilogue, but on reflection I find that readers both in and out of Scotland may desire to be told a little more about Robert Wallace, M.A., D.D., and M.P., a collocation of titles of honour, so far as I know, unexampled. He was a minister of the Church of Scotland from the summer of 1857 to the autumn of 1876; was in succession the minister of Newton-on-Ayr, of Trinity College Church, Edinburgh, and of Old Greyfriars', Edinburgh, in which last he succeeded Dr. Robert Lee, as also in the leadership of the Liberal Party of the Church of Scotland. The degree of D.D. was conferred upon him by the University of Glasgow, pretty much, it was believed, through the influence of Dr. Caird, the most eloquent preacher and one of the most profound theologians of our day. After Dr. Wallace became editor of the Scotsman he resigned his chair of Church History, his church, and even his licence to preach, and he left in abeyance the title of D.D., and became in his time, as a barrister-at-Iaw, plain Mr. Robert Wallace. But the degree of a university is, I believe, indelible, and he will always be Dr. Wallace to me. His degree of M.A., like mine, was conferred by the University of St Andrews in April 1853 after four years' study, during which we attended simultaneously every Humanity class. Book Description
Excerpt from George Buchanan and His Times Hugo Grotius, even went SO far as to call Buchanan that wonder of Scotland. But what the great Dr Johnson said of him is perhaps most interesting. Ah, Dr Johnson, said a rather foolish Scots man to him one day, what would you have said had Buchanan been an English man? Why, sir, answered the great doctor, I Should not have said, had he been an Englishman, what I will say of him as a Scotsman, that he was the only man of genius his country ever produced. Educated in Scotland and France, George Buchanan became one of the most influential writers of 16th century Europe. Writing in the lingua franca of his time - Classical Latin - he was to be hailed internationally as 'easily the prince of poets'. Here fifteen scholars, from many countries, analyse his writings, his creative use of ancient texts for contemporary purposes, and his impact on the culture of Scotland and of Europe - not least in the spheres of tragedy and music.
