It is despised by the logger but liked by the forester and the pulp mill manager in most areas of its range. The logger's negative reaction to Virginia pine results from the tree's small size and to its persistent branching habit, factors which adversely affect harvesting production. Dominant and codominant trees average only 23 to 25 meters tall and 28 to 30 centi meters at 50 years.2 Older trees may attain heights to 35 meters and diameters to 90 centimeters (harlow and Harrar but even they often retain branches and branch stubs the length of the bole below the live crown. Despite these deterrents, the species has gained the respect of foresters because of good volume and dry-weight yields at rota tion ages of 25 to 30 years (newland 1968, nc. State Univ. And of pulp mill managers because of suitability of the fiber for fine paper and groundwood products. These attributes are responsible for a recent planting program of several thousand acres annually. Secondary uses of Virginia pine include lumber and structural timber from sawlog-sized trees, and Christmas trees which are harvested at rotation ages of 6 to 10 years. Excerpt from The Genetics of Lodgepole Pine Lodgepole pine is a small tree, and only recently has it been heavily utilized in its native range. In northwestern Europe, however, the ability of some seed sources to grow well on poor sites and in cold climates has interested foresters for many years, and the species is now widely planted in the British Isles and Sweden. The oldest fossils of lodgepole pine are several million years old, but there is no evidence that the species was widespread until the late Pleistocene. It was an important pioneer following glacial melting, and occupied its extensive northern range by migration from the south and possibly from far-northern refugia. Lodgepole pine has been successfully crossed with only two other species: jack pine and Virginia pine. Crossability with jack pine is moderately high, and the two species hybridize naturally in Canada. Many northern Rocky Moun tain stands have jack pine-like characteristics, but the extent of introgression from jack pine is uncertain. Lodgepole x jack hybrids are fertile, but pollen abortion is sometimes high. Hybrids of Sierra Nevada parentage have not grown well in most other environments. Excerpt from Genetic Variation in a Provenance Test of 16-Year-Old Ponderosa Pine Hence, the Washington Creek plantation contained two replicates. The Crane Creek Plantation was not replicated except for one provenance. After the trees were 16 years old, the following data were obtained for trees undamaged by snow, porcupines, insects, and cattle: 16 and 11-year heights, diameter at the ground, and number of branches in the upper two whorls. At Crane Creek, a systematic sample of 67 to 75 trees for each provenance was taken so that observations were available from entire plots. Because of high mortality and snow damage at the Washington Creek site, only 12 to 73 trees were measured for each provenance. Percentages of mortality and trees damaged by snow were estimated for each plot at Washington Creek. Snow damage included major bends in the stem, grotesquely deformed stems and branches, and broken tops. There was virtually no snow damage at Crane Creek, and mortality was minimal.
