In the treacherous swamps of southeast Missouri, a different kind of Civil War was waged. Meriwether Jeff Thompson was one of the most intriguing but least-known Missouri participants in the Civil War. In June 1862, James J. Archer was promoted to the rank of brigadier general by Robert E. Lee. Serving with distinction in prominent battles such as those at Bull Run, Chancellorsville and Harpers Ferry, this lawyer-turned-general earned not only the respect of his superiors but the esteem and admiration of his men. The first earthen-work version, constructed during the War of 1812, was followed by a second 1820s plan incorporating a masonry star design with a network of drainage ditches.
