Feminist intervention in the sociology of sport has highlighted the ways in which sport is used to naturalize and reproduce male dominance in other institutions. Yet, some scholars argue that sport can also be a site of resistance to gender norms that support gender inequality. Based on an ethnographic study of three roller derby leagues, I argue that roller derby is a sport space where women are engaged in cultural struggle against restrictive norms of femininity. In particular, I focus on how rollergirls "undo" gender by wearing hyper-feminine uniforms while playing an aggressive contact sport. Furthermore, by following the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethic, rollergirls have created a non-alienating model of sport that provides an alternative to male dominated sports. This study also points to the limitations of the roller derby "revolution" by showing how rollergirls' acts of cultural resistance are both enabled and constrained by the social context in which they take place.

This book discusses femicide in Italy, and the cultural conversations that have resulted from feminist discourse on lethal violence against women entering the mainstream, by analyzing journalistic inquiries and literary works produced after 2012. In a global and national context where activism’s goals are mainly discursive this study deepens our understanding of the role played by written narratives in the critique of a public interest matter such as gender-based violence. The first part of the book is dedicated to the analysis of three journalistic inquiries published in book format that focus on one or more cases of femicide that happened on the Italian peninsula. The second section draws on the concept of feminist rewriting to propose the analysis of a heterogeneous body of literary texts that explore some of the most controversial and notorious femicide cases covered by previous journalistic, historical, or mythical narratives, before demonstrating the close connection between theoretical and narrative discourse within the analyzed texts. This is a fascinating case study contributing to global understandings of gender-based violence, which will be important for researchers in gender studies, sociology, and media studies.

Focusing on the influence of Maoist ideology and masculinist power on the representations of women in revolutionary opera films made during the Cultural Revolution, this book considers the gendered hierarchy between masculinity and femininity in relation to the historic and cultural context in which they were made. Using feminist methodology and epistemology to locate women’s social identity, this book explores the sociological connections between the masculinisation of women and masculinist domination in the context of the Cultural Revolution. Through film analysis, the author examines whether women, rather than 'liberated', were in fact re-gendered and oppressed by masculinist power. By critically evaluating gender hierarchy during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the book provides hitherto neglected insights into gender within its social and cultural context.
