Book Description
Stories of generals and battles of the American Civil War have been told and retold but relatively little has been written about the common soldiers who fought in the war. In his thoroughly researched history of the Civil War soldiers and families of the upstate New York town of Newark Valley, Jerry Marsh sheds light on the lives of three hundred and nineteen soldiers of the town. He tells of the preacher's son who prayed to be a faithful soldier under the "Stars and Stripes" and the "Banner of Jesus," the eleven families who sent their father and son(s) to the war, the seventy sets of brothers who served, the youths and older men who misrepresented their ages to enlist, the seventy-four men killed or wounded in battle and thirty-nine who died of disease, the families who brought their dead or dying sons back to be buried at home, and the veterans who became productive citizens in New York and across the expanding nation. Marsh's narrative is enhanced by photographs, letters, diaries, and anecdotes from descendants of the courageous soldiers who fought to save the Union and ensure the freedom of all citizens of the "new nation."

Book Description
Written by an experienced antiquarian, this book explores the history of utilitarian pottery production in New York State, beginning with the Dutch in Manhattan. The subject matter ranges across the entire state, from Long Island and the Mohawk and Hudson valleys, to the St. Lawrence, Lake Erie, and the Southern Tier. This completely revised and updated edition of a highly praised 1970 book brings our knowledge of New York State potters and potteries to the present, incorporating extensive research in specific localities and information from excavations that have been carried out in recent years. The author discusses the types of wares that were made in New York potteries and suggests why the industry flourished. A general introduction to pottery types and methods of glazing and firing orient the reader in what was an important industry in early New York State. Supplemented by dozens of photographs and line drawings, this book contains the only existing lists of marks used by New York potters, as well as an appendix listing more than 1,400 of the state’s individual craftsmen, including the communities in which they worked, their active dates, and the types of ware they produced. The book will be valuable for ceramists, collectors, antiquarians, and those interested in the social, cultural, and economic history of New York State.

Book Description
Women held a central place in long-settled rural communities like the Nanticoke Valley in upstate New York during the late nineteenth century. Their lives were limited by the bonds of kinship and labor, but farm women found strength in these bonds as well. Although they lacked control over land and were second-class citizens, these rural women did not occupy a "separate sphere." Individually and collectively, they responded to inequality by actively enlarging the dimensions of sharing in their relationships with men. Nancy Grey Osterud uses a rich store of diaries, letters, and other first-person documents, in addition to public and organizational records, to reconstruct the everyday lives of ordinary women of the past. Exploring large questions within the confines of a single community, she analyzes the ways in which notions of gender structured women's interactions with their families and neighbors, their place in the farm family economy, and their participation in organized community activities. Rare turn-of-the-century photographs of the rural landscape, formal and informal family portraits, and scenes of daily life and labor add a special dimension to Bonds of Community. It should find a ready audience among women's historians, labor historians, rural historians, and historians of New York State.
