LE COMPORTEMENT DE L'INTERFACE RENFORT-MATRICE ET CELUI DE LA MATRICE ADJACENTE JOUENT UN ROLE IMPORTANT SUR LES PROPRIETES MECANIQUES DES MATERIAUX COMPOSITES A MATRICE METALLIQUE. AFIN DE CARACTERISER CES COMPORTEMENTS, NOUS AVONS ETUDIE LES PROPRIETES D'INELASTICITE DE DEUX MATERIAUX: AL/12%VOL.SIC ET AL-7075/15%VOL.SIC. LE TRAVAIL EXPERIMENTAL CONCERNE PRINCIPALEMENT L'ETUDE DU FROTTEMENT INTERIEUR (F.I.) TRANSITOIRE QUI RESULTE, LORS D'UNE VARIATION DE TEMPERATURE DE L'ECHANTILLON, DE LA DIFFERENCE ENTRE LES COEFFICIENTS DE DILATATION DES PARTICULES ET DE LA MATRICE. LES CARACTERISTIQUES ESSENTIELLES DES SPECTRES REVELEES PAR LES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX SONT LES SUIVANTES: (I) LES SPECTRES DE F.I. (II) LE FI AUGMENTE LORSQUE LA VITESSE DE REFROIDISSEMENT ET LA PERIODE D'OSCILLATION SONT AUGMENTEES; CES PHENOMENES SONT LIES A LA PRESENCE DES PARTICULES. (III) LE FI DEPEND DE LA LIMITE D'ELASTICITE DE LA MATRICE ET DE L'HISTOIRE THERMIQUE DU MATERIAU. NOUS PROPOSONS ALORS UN MODELE DE F.I. QUI EXPLIQUE LES PRINCIPALES PROPRIETES MISES EN EVIDENCE. CE MODELE EST FONDE SUR LE MOUVEMENT DES DISLOCATIONS, AU VOISINAGE DES INTERFACES PARTICULE-MATRICE, QUI EST SUPPOSE ETRE CONTROLE PAR: (I) L'EVOLUTION, EN COURS DE REFROIDISSEMENT, DU CHAMP DE CONTRAINTE THERMIQUE DU A LA DIFFERENCE ENTRE LES COEFFICIENTS DE DILATATION DES PARTICULES ET DE LA MATRICE, (II) LA CONTRAINTE D'ORIGINE MECANIQUE INDUITE PAR L'OSCILLATION DU PENDULE, (III) LES OBSTACLES QUI S'OPPOSENT AU MOUVEMENT DE CES DISLOCATIONS, DONT L'EFFET EST REPRESENTE PAR UNE CONTRAINTE DE FROTTEMENT. L'ENERGIE DISSIPEE PENDANT UNE PERIODE D'OSCILLATION EST ALORS CALCULEE NUMERIQUEMENT EN FONCTION DES PRINCIPAUX PARAMETRES CONTROLANT LE PHENOMENE. Book Description
Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Book Description
It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals

Book Description
The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Book Description
Genmix: A General Computer Program for Two-dimensional Parabolic Phenomena explains a computer program called GENMIX. The main intention of the program is to be used as a tool of instructions. The name of the program is a mixture of two considerations: its generality and its concern for mixing processes. The book aims to help the potential user to understand the physical and mathematical basis of the topic computer program. It is also the aim of the book to make the program applicable to practical problems. The book is arranged in such a way as to parallel a course of lectures and associated computer-workshop sessions wherein the student is allowed to do some elementary computations as soon as he has gained some knowledge of the method. The book contains the mathematical, physical, and computer-coding aspects of the program. Concepts such as the boundary layer, two-dimensional, and steady- flow are defined and discussed in depth. The text will be a useful tool for computer instructors and students.
