ISBN:
Category : Political Science

Book Description
Bringing together an interdisciplinary team of scholars, this collection of essays intends to enrich and move our understanding of southern African societies, and to contribute to the policies and scholarship of the region, in a pan-African context. The authors aim to vigorously re-examine the complex processes of national liberation and the challenges of post-liberation identity politics, democratisation and social transformation. They further engage with political and cultural economies, in order to challenge and deconstruct dominant discourses in southern African studies and historiography. Taken collectively, the chapters constitute critical reflections on the southern African component of the pan-African ideal, the ongoing quest for a democratic renaissance and greater regional cooperation and integration.

Author: Chenai G. Matshaka
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1793645353
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 207
Book Description
In Civil Society Narratives of Violence and Shaping the Transitional Justice Agenda in Zimbabwe, Chenai G. Matshaka shows the shaping of the transitional justice agenda in Zimbabwe from a civil society perspective. Based on the understanding that transitional justice approaches are seen through the lenses by which the violence and conflict is understood, Matshaka explores the complexities that arise when particular narratives of violence dominate the agenda. This book contributes to a discussion on how narratives intervene in the trajectory of a transitional justice process of a society in ways that may be beneficial or detrimental to breaking cycles of injustice and domination.

No Longer Whispering to Power
Author: Thandeka Gqubule
Publisher: Jonathan Ball Publishers
ISBN: 1868427323
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
Thuli Madonsela achieved in seven years as Public Protector what few accomplish in a lifetime; her legacy and contribution cannot be overstated. In her final days in office she compiled the explosive State of Capture report and, two years before that, Secure in Comfort, the report on President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla residence. Praised and vilified in equal measure, Madonsela frequently found herself on centre stage in the increasingly fractious South African political scene. Yet, despite the intense media scrutiny, Madonsela remains something of an enigma. Who is this soft-spoken woman who stood up to state corruption? Where did she develop her views and resolve? In No Longer Whispering to Power Thandeka Gqubule, journalist and one of the 'SABC 8' fired and rehired by the broadcaster, attempts to answer these questions, and others, by exploring aspects of Madonsela's life: her childhood years and family, her involvement in student politics, her time in prison, her contribution to the Constitution, and her life in law.

Prophetic Remembrance
Author: Erica Still
Publisher: University of Virginia Press
ISBN: 0813936578
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
Using the term "prophetic remembrance" to articulate the expression of a constituent faith in the performative capacity of language, Erica Still shows how black subjectivity is born of and interprets cultural trauma. She brings together African American neo-slave narratives and Black South African postapartheid narratives to reveal the processes by which black subjectivity accounts for its traumatic origins, names the therapeutic work of the present, and inscribes the possibility of the future. The author draws on trauma studies, black theology, and literary criticism as she considers how writers such as Toni Morrison, Charles Johnson, John Edgar Wideman, David Bradley, Sindiwe Magona, K. Sello Duiker, and Zakes Mda explore the possibilities for rehearsing a traumatic past without being overcome by it. Although both African American and South African literary studies have addressed questions of memory, narrative, and trauma, little comparative work has been done. Prophetic Remembrance offers this comparative focus in reading these literatures together to address the question of what it means to remember and to recover from racial oppression.
