Blurred Nationalities across the North Atlantic
Author: Luca Codignola
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487530455
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 614
Book Description
Long before the mid-nineteenth century, thousands of people were frequently moving between North America – specifically, the United States and British North America – and Leghorn, Genoa, Naples, Rome, Sicily, Piedmont, Lombardy, Venice, and Trieste. Predominantly traders, sailors, transient workers, Catholic priests, and seminarians, this group relied on the exchange of goods across the Atlantic to solidify transatlantic relations; during this period, stories about the New World passed between travellers through word of mouth and letter writing. Blurred Nationalities across the North Atlantic challenges the idea that national origin – for instance, Italianness – constitutes the only significant feature of a group’s identity, revealing instead the multifaceted personalities of the people involved in these exchanges.

Author: Josie Di Sciascio-Andrews
Publisher: Dragon Hill Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
From the moment explorer Giovanni Caboto stepped onto Canadian soil, Italians have left their footprints on Canadian history. In the 1700s, Italians including Alphonse and Henri de Tonti came to New France to trade with the Natives and settle the vast land. In the 1800s, Italian workers built the foundation for railways and highways into Canada's northern forests. Today, Little Italy is a part of every major Canadian city. The Italian-Canadian vote is even credited with helping keep Canada together in Québec's sovereignty referendum.

Human Rights, Education & Global Responsibilities
Author: James Lynch
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317938933
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 386
Book Description
First published in 1992. This is Volume 4 of a series of four on Cultural Diversity and the Schools and focusses on Human Rights, Education and Global Responsibilities. One of the major problems facing societies in almost all parts of the world is the inadequate accommodation of social equity with cultural diversity. The crisis emanating from neglect of this issue can be seen in societies as different and wide apart as the Soviet Union, India, Pakistan, the United States and the United Kingdom. This series seeks to contribute, through joint publication and the stimulation of greater discourse, to identify the pathways to a less selfish and parochial response to the continuing dilemma of equity and diversity, not solely within the nation state, but also internationally.
