Book Description
Excerpt from French Commercial Practice Connected With the Export and Import Trade to and From France, the French Colonies, and the Countries Where French Is the Recognised Language of Commerce, Vol. 1 This commercial series of modern language handbooks is the first of its kind, and has been designed and written with a view to aiding the maintenance and development of British commerce in foreign markets. The series is intended for the use of commercial students and traders. It deals with the French, German, and Spanish languages as they are applied in actual commerce, and practically the whole of the matter contained in the books is drawn from real business, the series of letters and the documents having been used in actual foreign trade transactions. The books are the result (a) of much educational experience in connection with a scheme of commercial education on the one hand, and, on the other hand, (6) of eighteen years of practical experience in connection with several large shipping houses both at home and abroad. Every endeavour has been made throughout to present the matter in such a manner that its influence may be thoroughly educational, if regarded as a mental training of a specialist type. Book Description
Excerpt from French Commercial Practice Connected With the Export and Import Trade to and From France, the French Colonies, and the Countries Where French Is the Recognised Language of Commerce, Vol. 2 To do so would in either case give a distorted picture and an untrue and inaccurate idea of the real trading practice of the other country. We repeat that the books are primarily characteristic of the trading practice of France, Germany, and Spain; but we would, in addition, point out that in the advanced handbooks we, after dealing fully with these characteristics, proceed to illustrate fairly exhaustively the practice of trading in operation in the French colonies, the German colonies, and the Old Spanish colonies and, lastly, the characteristics of the foreign countries adopting French, German, or Spanish as their recognised medium of communication. We also give facsimiles of French, German, and Spanish commercial documents and letters. Explanatory notes are also appended, wherever it is thought necessary, to throw light on points which may not be quite clear to the student or the trader. The leading idea that has been before us is that of a merchant doing a good home trade, who is desirous of developing a foreign trade in addition to this. The merchant himself has no time to devote to learning the technique of foreign trade. He has, however, a son who is on the point of leaving a good secondary school. This son he wishes to acquire a knowledge of foreign trade and customs in order that he, the son, may develop the desired foreign department. Fortunately, this youth is already possessed of a good general education; so we can, therefore, at once begin to train him specially. We begin to educate him so as to enable him successively to initiate, to develop, to supervise, and finally to direct a foreign trade department alongside his father's home trade department. In the first and introductory book, we place the young man on safe general ground when meeting with Frenchmen, Germans, or Spaniards, and show him how to reply to letters of courtesy.
