Book Description
Since 2007, the European Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) has ended the national rule of order concentration and the directive has increased the fragmentation among the trading venues. This paper examines the price discovery dynamics for cross-listed CAC40 stocks, through the Information Shares metric, over the years 2012 and 2013 for three key places: NYSE Euronext Paris, BATS Europe and Chi-X Europe. We use the highfrequency order flow on individual stocks to study the monthly contribution of the Regulated Market (Euronext Paris) and Multilateral Trading Facilities (BATS and Chi-X Europe) to the price discovery by using the spread midpoint on the best limits at one-second intervals. We observe that the Multilateral trading facilities contribute significantly to the price discovery dynamics. The revision of MiFID should enhance the trade-through protections, and unified trade and price reporting protocols to avoid that fragmentation is detrimental on the market quality after the Brexit.

Book Description
We analyze price discovery dynamics for Canadian companies cross-listed on the NYSE from January 2004 to January 2011. We employ a structural vector autoregression to assess the interactions between price discovery, liquidity and algorithmic trading activity. We observe that over time, the U.S. market is gaining dominance in terms of price discovery. Improvements in liquidity increase a market's contribution to price discovery, and vice versa. We find that algorithmic trading activity is negatively related to price discovery, indicating negative externalities of high-frequency trading. These results are robust to regulatory changes in the U.S. and fragmentation in the Canadian financial markets.

Book Description
This is the first major treatment of the effects of increased transparency on financial markets: an important and highly controversial issue for both traders and regulators. Focussing on three main themes - market transparency, the consolidation-fragmentation of trading systems, and the scope of regulation (i.e. which markets, and which traders within those markets, should be subject to regulation), the book highlights the importance of these issues to all markets throughout the world. The book draws on research from eight UK based investment exchanges, Deutsche Borse in Frankfurt and documentary evidence from the US markets and their regulators enabling the identification and documentation of the current situation and consideration of what fresh regulatory approaches are required for this new and fast evolving situation.

Book Description
We study insider trading disclosure in a dynamic model where a security is traded in two venues by an insider together with noise traders, and prices are set by competitive dealers in each location, under two alternative information regimes. We first posit that markets are informationally segmented, in that market makers are privy to the information gathered in their venue. In this case, fragmentation has no effect on the price discovery impact of insider trades' disclosure. We then allow market makers in a given venue to also observe the other venue's past period price as well as a noisy signal of that venue's order flow. In this case, we show that if markets are sufficiently pre-trade transparent, disclosure can impair price discovery.

Book Description
This book exposes and comments on the consequences of Reg NMS and MiFID on market microstructure. It covers changes in market design, electronic trading, and investor and trader behaviors. The emergence of high frequency trading and critical events like the'Flash Crash' of 2010 are also analyzed in depth.Using a quantitative viewpoint, this book explains how an attrition of liquidity and regulatory changes can impact the whole microstructure of financial markets. A mathematical Appendix details the quantitative tools and indicators used through the book, allowing the reader to go further independently. This book is written by practitioners and theoretical experts and covers practical aspects (like the optimal infrastructure needed to trade electronically in modern markets) and abstract analyses (like the use on entropy measurements to understand the progress of market fragmentation). As market microstructure is a recent academic field, students will benefit from the book's overview of the current state of microstructure and will use the Appendix to understand important methodologies. Policy makers and regulators will use this book to access theoretical analyses on real cases. For readers who are practitioners, this book delivers data analysis and basic processes like the designs of Smart Order Routing and trade scheduling algorithms. In this second edition, the authors have added a large section on orderbook dynamics, showing how liquidity can predict future price moves, and how High Frequency Traders can profit from it. The section on market impact has also been updated to show how buying or selling pressure moves prices not only for a few hours, but even for days, and how prices relax (or not) after a period of intense pressure.Further, this edition includes pages on Dark Pools, Circuit Breakers and added information outside of Equity Trading, because MiFID 2 is likely to push fixed income markets towards more electronification. The authors explore what is to be expected from this change in microstructure. The appendix has also been augmented to include the propagator models (for intraday price impact), a simple version of Kyle's model (1985) for daily market impact, and a more sophisticated optimal trading framework, to support the design of trading algorithms.

Book Description
Since the 2008 financial crisis, researchers and policy makers have been looking to empirical data to distil both what happened and how a similar event can be avoided in the future. In Lit and Dark Liquidity with Lost Time Data, Vuorenmaa analyses liquidity to better understand the crux of the financial crisis. By relating liquidity to jump activity, market microstructure noise variance, and average pairwise correlation, Vuorenmaa uncovers the dynamics and ramifications behind anonymous trades made outside of public exchanges, and measures its impact on the crisis. This volume is ideal for academics, students, and practitioners alike, who are interested in investigating the role of lost time in and after the recession.
