Book Description
Excerpt from Forty-Ninth Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1916 The forty-ninth annual meeting of the Maryland State Teachers' Association was called to order at 8 P. M. on Tuesday evening, June 27th, by the President, William J. Holloway. The invocation was offered by the Reverend S. A. Potter, Rector of St. Paul's P. E. Church, Berlin, and St. Paul by the Sea, Ocean City, as follows: "Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings, with Thy most gracious favor, and further us with Thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued and ended in Thee, we may glorify Thy holy Name, and finally, by Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life. "And we pray that Thy blessing, O God, may rest upon this assembly of men and women, that they may be inspired with a hearty desire to be instrumental in guiding into right paths the youth of this State of Maryland, and that they may be filled with the spirit of wisdom to enable them to successfully accomplish their desire. "Help them to realize the sacredness of the work in which they are engaged, and to know that they are called to train and develop the morals, as well as the intellectual faculties, of those committed to their care. "Help them, one and all, to perceive the vast importance of the work in which they are engaged, so that they may diligently seek to become more and more efficient as instructors and educators, to the end that they may with greater proficiency inculcate the doctrines of purity of purpose, unimpeachable integrity, and self-dependence in the hearts of their pupils. "May they all be granted the highest ideals in the pursuit of their vocation, and may they have such success in their undertaking that the sons committed to their care may grow up as the pillars of Church and State, and the daughters be as the polished corners of the Temple. "And grant, O Lord, that in all their words and acts, everything may tend to the advancement of Thy glory and the welfare of men. "We ask it all through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen." The President introduced the first speaker of the evening, as follows: "The Executive Committee has spared no pains nor expense to provide for this annual meeting of the State Teachers' Association profitable and interesting entertainment in the way of speakers and music. Excerpt from Forty-Third Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1910 We have reached another mile post in the history of the Maryland State Teachers' Association. A retrospect may not be encouraging, if we con sider numbers as the only element of growth. It does appear that the Association is not as large, numerically, as it was a year ago; but let us hope that, in all the other essential elements of growth, there has been steady advancement. Book Description
Excerpt from Forty-Sixth Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1940 There has been more than a. Traditional respect for the idea that unless the meeting of the Maryland State Teachers' Association be held at. Some resort-place the enrollment would be a failure. It can be said to the credit of the Association that the spirit which dominates its mem hership is of such an order as to put to flight any such false notions. The Annapolis meeting is a complete answer to the oft repeated charge that teachers attend this annual gathering primarily for pleasure, and because of an opportunity to spend a few days at the seaside or in some mountain resort. It is now plain the real motive is educational or professional. Teachers, first of all, want to keep in touch with ques tions which affect their work; they want the inspiration and encourage ment which come from participation in the program or listening to the expressed ideas of those whose Opportunities have been better than. Theirs and they appreciate an interchange of views on matters of common interest. Annapolis, the capital of our State, could not make its appeal to our school people that it is a pleasure resort, but barring one or two meetings, the enrollment this year (nearly eight hundred) is as good as we have ever had.
