As a result Fort George, a palisaded log blockhouse, was begun In 1761 under the supervision of His Majesty's surveyor-general John Gerar William de Brahm. This pioneer fort on Cockspur Point provided a measure of defense for the Savannah harbor, but principally enforced quarantine and customs regulations, until the revolutionary activities of 1776 when it was dismantled and abandoned by the Patriots, who knew the fortification could not stand against a strong fleet. Excerpt from Master Plan, Fort Pulaski National Monument, Georgia For more than two centuries, Cockspur Island has had an unbroken history of use for defensive purposes, serving as the site of three forts. Beacons, lighthouses, and quarantine stations, dating back to the 18th century, have utilized sites on the island. It was a transshipment point for colonists and colonial cargoes, and during the Revolution it was briefly the capital of Georgia when the Royal Governor took refuge there with the Great Seal. Here in 1736, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism began his mission on American soil. Here also in 1829, Robert E. Lee began his remarkable military career. After the War of 1812, because of the great weakness of American coastal defenses, Congress authorized construction of Fort Pulaski to guard the trade and commerce of Savannah and the Savannah River. Completed in 1847, the Fort was considered impregnable. The massive walls insured protection from attack by sea and the salt marshes prevented attack or approach from land.a? Forts are a lasting tribute to the prominence of the US military, and Fort Pulaski stands among these magnificent fortresses. Overlooking the mouth of the Savannah River and the Atlantic Ocean, Fort Pulaski is named in honor of Gen. Casimir Pulaski, Revolutionary War hero and father of the US Cavalry, which endured some of the most damaging artillery combat in early American warfare. In addition to its unfortunate notoriety for serving as the first fort where a rifled cannon was successfully tested in combat against masonry forts, it played a part in other significant events, including a baseball game during the Civil War where one of the first photographs of the sport was taken with the newly invented camera. Ultimately, the fort was considered important enough to be preserved and designated a national monument.
