Itis not always possible to vary the location so as to maintain an equable or steady, even grade in all portions of a flume line, but wherever it can be accomplished without incurring too great an expense it should always be done. Flume Operators have found the question of satisfactory grade to be one of the most important features of successfully fluming material, since where there is a stretch Of comparatively flat grade the supply Of water may be ample to nearly fill the flume, but upon arrival at a point in the flume line where the descent is very abrupt, the accelerated speed Of the water reduces its volume to a small amount in the bottom of the flume and, consequently, results in the flumed material rub bing or sliding down the descent for a long distance on the sides of the V. Was calibrated in order to make possible the successful use in the distribution of water of the structures of this type already installed. The accuracy of the device is sufficient for ordinary requirements, but it is not to be recommended in preference to the standard types of weirs. A comparison of the experimental discharges with the computed discharges for the free ow and for the submerged conditions shows that 77 per cent of all the free-flow computed discharges are in error by less than 2 per cent, and that 74 per cent of all the submerged-flow computed discharges are in error by less than 5 per cent. Excerpt from Flume Systems for Handling Bulk-Stored Potatoes Flumes should be large enough so that large potatoes do not wedge crosswise and clog the flume and small enough so that the volume of water needed is not excessive. The flume should also be designed: (1) To keep the velocity of the potatoes below 60 feet per minute and (2) to keep the potatoes in the flume from 6 to 8 minutes where possible. The use of flumes to move potatoes from bulk bins to the washing and packing line (1) requires less labor than other methods, makes washing equipment more effective by loosening the soil, (3) handles the potatoes with less injury than other methods, and (4) for long-distances, costs less for ownership and operation than conveyors. Labor savings can really be significant. One plant has installed flumes to replace a conveyor system and now uses 1 worker to direct the flow of water to move potatoes into the flume; formerly, a crew of 4 to 6 workers was needed to fork the potatoes into the conveyors. Fluming also eliminates the need for cleaning up the, soil left in the bins, be cause during fluming operations all the soil is washed out through the flume system. Excerpt from Field Performance of Large Critical-Depth Flumes for Measuring Runoff From Semiarid Rangelands The critical-depth flumes on Walnut Gulch (fig. 2) are designed with a broad entrance section approximately the size of the original channel section, a 15-foot-long contraction reach with warped sidewalls to force the flow through critical depth, and a 20-foot straight reach. The water-level gaging section is located in the middle of the straight reach (10 feet from the down stream edge of the flume). A bottom slope of 3 percent keeps the flow accelerating throughout the length of the flume and eliminates deposition of the heavy sediment load in the flume. Thus the head measurement is made in the section where the flow is supercritical. The water-surface elevation in the flume is measured by a float-actuated water-level recorder, operating in a stilling well that is built into the structure and connected to the' measuring section by an intake system. Drainage areas above the five critical-depth flumes now operating on the Walnut Gulch watershed range from to 58 square miles. The original design capacities of these flumes.
