Book Description
Excerpt from Florida Its Climate, Soil, Productions, and Agricultural Capabilities There is one general feature in the topography of Florida which no other country in the United States possesses, and which affords a great security to the health of its inhabitants. It is this that the pine lands which form the basis of the country, and which are almost universally healthy, are nearly everywhere studded, at intervals of a few miles, with hammock lands of the richest quality. These hammocks are not, as is generally supposed, low, wet lands they never require ditching or draining; they vary in extent from 20 acres to acres, and will probably average about 500 acres each. Hence, the inhabitants have it everywhere in their power to select residences in the pine lands, at such convenient distances from the hammocks as will enable them to cultivate the latter without endangering their health, if it should so happen that any of the hammocks proved to be less healthy than the pine woods. Book Description
Excerpt from Florida, Its Climate, Soil, and Productions: With a Sketch of Its History, Natural Features and Social Condition; A Manual of Reliable Information Concerning the Resources of the State, and the Inducements Which It Offers to Immigrants Our correspondence is filled with a multitude of questions about Florida, her climate, condition, capacity and prospects. These inquiries are mainly from earnest men who are contem plating immigration, and whose very anxiety points them out as the class of men from which the most desirable accession to our population will come. The impossibility of giving adequate and satisfactory answers to this multitude of questions, by letter, has led us to the compi lation of this pamphlet. Our object is, not to make a book on Florida, but simply, to give, in few words, information that may be relied on as cor rect, and that will as fully as possible respond to the questions that are asked, as well as to those that would naturally suggest themselves to the minds of those who are looking to this State as their possible future home. We shall consult the most authentic sources of information, and, while we may not always cite the authorities referred to, we intend to give a truthful statement in regard to any matter touched upon; and wherever positive statements of fact are made, they may be implicitly relied upon. The whole subject naturally presents itself under vari heads, and will be so treated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Preliminary Report on the Soils of Florida In January, 1897, a reconnoissance trip was taken over Florida in order to make a preliminary study of some of the important soils and soil conditions of the State. The principal types of soils examined were the first, second, and third quality of high pine land; the pine flats or so-called flat woods; the light hammock, the gray or heavy hammock, the mixed land, the heavy marl hammock; the pineapple land; the Etonia scrub, the Spruce pine scrub; and the Lafayette formation. Book Description
Excerpt from Observations on the Soils and Products of Florida I was shown some young trees, planted on lower and damper soil than that of the main grove, which had not done so well; but a part of the grove had been ditched, with great improvement visible on the trees. Book Description
Florida Historical Society Charlton Tebeau Award With an eye for the illogical and a flair for the irreverent, journalist Mark Lane aims his sharp wit at one of the most intriguing duties of the Florida legislature—signing state symbols into law. In Roaring Reptiles, Bountiful Citrus, and Neon Pies, he spotlights nineteen things that have been proposed and/or appointed to officially define Florida. Lane guides readers through the often-comic historical events that led to the selection of Florida’s official fruit, tree, gem, bird, song, and other items ranging from the well known to the obscure, packing in personal stories and laugh-out-loud moments along the way. Did you know the state slogan was almost “the alligator state”? Or that a mailbox in the shape of the state marine mammal can tell you a lot about a person? Readers will also discover that the bill proposing the state soil caused a crisis in the Senate and that the state play—written in the peculiar genre of symphonic outdoor drama—puts a heroic spin on the grisly European conquest of St. Augustine. “Full of the kind of unnecessary commentary that might cause trouble,” as Lane describes it, this book is also written with affection toward the wide diversity of lives and experiences that make up the state he calls home. He shows that deciding the things that represent us at any given moment is far trickier than it appears. Especially in Florida, a state aptly symbolized by “a lot of contradictions baked into a Key lime pie.”
