Book Description
Floral morphology is key for understanding floral evolution and plant identification. Floral diagrams are two-dimensional representations of flowers that replace extensive descriptions or elaborate drawings to convey information in a clear and unbiased way. Following the same outline as the first edition, this comprehensive guide includes updated and relevant literature, represents the latest phylogeny, and features 28 new diagrams. Diagrams are presented in the context of the most recent classifications, covering a variety of families and illustrating the floral diversity of major groups of plants. A strong didactic tool for observing and understanding floral structures, these diagrams are the obvious counterpart to any genetic study in flowering plants and to the discussion of major adaptations and evolutionary trends of flowers. This book is invaluable for researchers and students working on plant structure, development and systematics, as well as being an important resource for plant ecologists, evolutionary botanists and horticulturists.

Floral Diagrams
Author: Louis P. Ronse De Craene
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521729451
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 458
Book Description
Floral morphology remains the cornerstone for plant identification and studies of plant evolution. This guide gives a global overview of the floral diversity of the angiosperms through the use of detailed floral diagrams. These schematic diagrams replace long descriptions or complicated drawings as a tool for understanding floral structure and evolution. They show important features of flowers, such as the relative positions of the different organs, their fusion, symmetry, and structural details. The relevance of the diagrams is discussed, and pertinent evolutionary trends are illustrated. The range of plant species represented reflects the most recent classification of flowering plants based mainly on molecular data, which is expected to remain stable in the future. This book is invaluable for researchers and students working on plant structure, development and systematics, as well as being an important resource for plant ecologists, evolutionary botanists and horticulturists.

Plant Form
Author: Adrian D. Bell
Publisher: Timber Press
ISBN: 088192850X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 433
Book Description
The ideal reference for students of botany and horticulture, gardeners, and naturalists. The diverse external shapes and structures that make up flowering plants can be bewildering and even daunting, as can the terminology used to describe them. An understanding of plant form—plant morphology—is essential to appreciating the wonders of the plant world and to the study of botany and horticulture at every level. In this ingeniously designed volume, the complex subject becomes both accessible and manageable. The first part of the book describes and clearly illustrates the major plant structures that can be seen with the naked eye or a hand lens. The second part focuses on how plants grow: bud development, the growth of reproductive organs, leaf arrangement, branching patterns, and the accumulation and loss of structures. Aimed at students of botany and horticulture, enthusiastic gardeners, and amateur naturalists, it functions as an illustrated dictionary, a basic course in plant morphology, and an intriguing and enlightening book to dip into.

Floral Formula

Publisher: Chandan Sukumar Sengupta

Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 34
Book Description
This investigatory project is taken up as an investigatory study involving studies to analyse significance of Floral Formula to meet taxonomical purposes. This mechanism was used for the first time by Cassel, used along with 4-integer series to represent the different whorls of floral parts to describe characteristics of floral families (Grisebach)[i]. An extension of the existing model to broaden the descriptive capability of the formula was developed and used by Prenner; an argument is also advanced that formulae should be included in formal taxonomic descriptions. It is expected that this exploratory will provide us an ample scope of understanding mechanism involved in developing and using floral formula for facilitating classification of flowering plants. We will also conventional as well as modern ways of presentation of floral formula. Even some of the floral formulae can be decoded to work out a better understanding of the mechanism. Author: Gurcharan Singh
Publisher: Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781578083510
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 576
Book Description
"The book strikes a balance between classical fundamental information and the recent developments in plant systematics. Special attention has been devoted to the information on botanical nomenclature, identification and phylogeny of angiosperms with numerous relevant examples and detailed explanation of the important nomenclatural problems. An attempt has been made to present a continuity between orthodox and contemporary identification methods by working on a common example. The methods of identification using computers have been further explored to help better online identification. The chapter on cladistic methods has been totally revised, and molecular systematics discussed in considerable detail."--Jacket.
