Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of Indiana From thy gates came men of fame, Proud the nation is to claim. Glorious Indiana! Great in story and in song, Placing right against the wrong, Noble sons and daughters pure Make thy future promise sure, O Indiana, O Indiana! We sing to thee alone. - From the song, "Indiana" by C. W. Harlan, Warsaw, Ind. By permission. The story of Indiana has its beginning millions of years before man came upon the earth and left a record of his deeds upon monuments, stone tablets and parchments. Yet we have not a man-written record of what happened in those almost inconceivably distant times while the earth was in the making. Nature is the author who wrote down what happened as the years were counted off in tens of millions, not in scores, as is done by man. The pages of her book are the great beds of rock that extend in wide layers beneath the surface of our state, the oldest pages underneath, the latest above. The letters and words of her book are the fossils of plants and animals that lived at different periods in the past and were buried in the muds of the sea floor which in time hardened into rock. Men of science, after long study, have learned to read the pages of Nature's book and have told us the story of what Indiana was long, long before man appeared to write down his own history. Book Description
Flora of Indiana has served as the standard by which other state floras must be compared. Now over 60 years old, it has clearly withstood the test of time, and continues to be a primary source of information for any serious student of field botany. Deam insisted upon the highest standards for his work, and strove to make the Flora as accurate as possible. He examined over 84,000 specimens in preparation for the book, and from these he prepared keys, species accounts, and range maps showing species¿ occurrence by county. Although these maps reflect the knowledge only as it existed in 1940, they continue to be useful today in determining a species¿ general range in the state. This is especially helpful for the beginner, or one not familiar with Indiana¿s flora, as it can reduce the field of options when trying to determine an unknown plant¿s identity.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Insect Galls of Indiana For some time I have been working upon a monograph of the Insect Galls of North America. This monograph will be arranged with reference to the plants on which the galls are produced, and special attention will be given to the galls as pathological structures. I should very much appreciate specimens and data from differ ent parts of North America. Most specimens are best sent dry, and should be accompanied by name of host plant or sufficient material for determination. All material and data will be duly credited. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lichen-Flora of Chicago and Vicinity The following report, based upon my personal investigations, collections and studies, during a period of many years, has been prepared by invitation of the Board of Managers of the Geological and Natural History Survey of The Chicago Academy of Sciences. As directed by the Board the report covers an area comprising all of Cook and Du Page Counties, nine townships in the northwest part of Will County, and a portion of Lake County, Indiana. This territory might be thought sufficiently large to furnish an attractive field and ample material for the investigation and study of lichens, yet with the exception of the most common species, a few of which are cosmopolitan in their habits, the explorer will meet with a dis appointment not to be experienced further south and west in regions where the conditions of the soil, the geological features of the country, and the climate favor a larger development of species. Hence mountainous districts and the extreme South offer the great est variety of forms, those of Florida being 'largely semi-tropical and identical with West Indian and Central American species, especially in certain genera, as Graphis and Arthonia. However, in the field under our consideration, enough varieties occur to form an excellent preliminary course of study, fitting the student for larger views and greater results when he has become familiar with the Parmelias and Physcias which are so abundant on oaks and other trees along the lake shore and in the wooded islands of the prairies.
