Book Description
This book investigates a complex layer ofmysteries and cluesconcealed in van Gogh's paintings and biography. New points of view on the painter's life are introduced and a foundation is laid for the interpretation of the iconography withinhis work. The book deduces from the painter's biography: a previously unexplored interpretation of the final argument with Gauguin; the critical role played by Rachel, la jeune fille d'Arles working in rue des Récollets, in the final years of the painter's life; Theo's role in quelling the scandal of the December 23rd ear amputation and Gauguin's ensuing arrest; The author underscores his thesis though a series of details in van Gogh's works, the painter's own letters, and by re-visiting well known events in his life. This juxtaposing of biographical facts with the psychological origins of the works posits an exciting new thesis in "A Secret of Van Gogh: His Motif and Motives" that will be of great interest to a wide audience of readers.

Book Description

Book Description
Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.

Book Description
"Pelli focuses on the unique position of architecture among the arts. He analyzes eight "connections" that influence both the artistic and practical aspects of architecture: time, construction, place, purpose, culture, design process, constituency, and oneself. Pelli discusses each connection, drawing on historic and contemporary examples, and then turns to first-person commentary, illustrating his experiences with his own buildings and projects, including such important buildings as Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (the world's tallest buildings), the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, and Washington National Airport."--Jacket.

Book Description
March 1953. Four young men venture onto the rooftop of the Palazzo Muti Baglioni in Venice. Among them is Hugo Pratt, the comic book artist returning from his first success in Argentina. Corto Maltese, his best known character, will not appear until 1967 with the publication of "A Ballad of the Salt Sea". However, the inspiration for Corto may already be at this rooftop gathering in Venice. Antonino Saggio, professor in architecture at the Sapienza University of Rome, reconstructs the young mens' relationship through a set of photographs of that day and recognizes his uncle in a completely unexpected role among the young friends joking above the roofs of Venice.

Book Description
The construction and operation of buildings is responsible for 41 percent of all primary energy use and 48 percent of all carbon emissions, and the impact of the demolition and removal of an older building can greatly diminish the advantages of adding green technologies to new construction. In Building Reuse, Kathryn Rogers Merlino makes an impassioned case that truly sustainable design requires reusing and reimagining existing buildings. Additionally, Merlino calls for a more expansive view of preservation that goes beyond keeping only the most distinctive structures based on their historical and cultural significance to embrace the creative reuse of even unremarkable buildings for their environmental value. Building Reuse includes a compelling range of case studies—from a private home to an eighteen-story office building—all located in the Pacific Northwest, a region with a long history of sustainable design and urban growth policies that have made reuse projects feasible. Reusing existing buildings can be challenging to accomplish, but changing the way we think about environmentally conscious architecture has the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions, and waste.
