Book Description
Excerpt from First Hebrew Book The plan of the following Work is the same as that which I have pursued in my other First Books. I have principally followed Gesenius; and the later chapters of the Work, especially those which treat of the 'irregular' or Weak' conjugations, are an abridged translation of that author's Grammar. These portions contain more information than will be at first necessary for the pupil; indeed, it will not be absolutely necessary that he should do more than commit to memory the short-paradigm' pres fixed to each chapter, and the accompanying Table of 'normal Forms, ' before he proceeds to translate the Exercise, with which the chapter concludes. When he meets with any variation from the forms he has committed to memory, he must refer to the fuller account of the conjugation that follows the Paradigm. Book Description
The dawning of the nineteenth century found the Jews of Eastern Europe torn between the forces of progress and reaction as they took their first tentative steps toward the modern world. In a war of words and of books, Haskaia–the Jewish Enlightenment–did battle with the religious revival movement known as Hasidism. Perl, an ardent advocate of Enlightenment, unleashed the opening salvo with the publication in 1819 of Revealer of Secrets. The novel tried to pass itself off as a hasidic holy book when it was, in fact, a broadside against Hasidism–a parody of its teachings and of the language of its holy books. The outraged hasidim responded by buying up and burning as many copies as they could. Dov Taylor's careful translation and commentary make this classic of Hebrew literature available and accessible to the contemporary English-speaking reader while preserving the integrity and bite of Perl's original. With Hasidism presently enjoying a remarkable rebirth, the issues in Revealer of Secrets are all the more relevant to those seeking to balance reason and faith. As the first Hebrew novel, the work will also be of great interest to students of modern Hebrew literature and modern Jewish history.

Book Description
Excerpt from A First Hebrew Reader His book is designed for students who wish to learn in a short time enough Hebrew to enable them to read one of the simple books of the Hebrew Bible. The writer makes no attempt to give an accurate knowledge of the details of Hebrew Grammar. He has in view those who will have no tutor, and seeks to make them familiar from the beginning with reading Hebrew as it is in a book of the Bible. The illustrations are all taken from the Book of Jonah. Four or five months of regular study will enable the reader to master this First Hebrew Reader. He will then be able to read fluently the Book of Jonah, and can proceed to the more systematic study of the language by using Professor A. B. Davidson's well known Hebrew Grammar. The writer desires to offer his thanks to Dr. James Kennedy of the New College, Edinburgh, who read the proofs and made several helpful suggestions. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of the Hebrew Text of the Old Testament The following pages would not have seen the light but for the fact that there is no precisely similar composition, going over the same ground, in existence. The object aimed at has been to trace the growth of the Hebrew text from its beginning until it reaches the form in which it appears to the reader of a modern printed Hebrew Bible. It has been sought to explain everything which meets the eye on the printed page, or to indicate where such explanation may be readily found. Book Description
Excerpt from The Early History of the Hebrews Their translations and interpretations were alike erroneous, that they had misread the names of Chedorlaomer and his allies, and that the 'arm of the Mighty King, ' in the letters of ebed-tob, meant the Pharaoh of Egypt. Unfortunately, the infallibility of the 'critical' consciousness can be better tested in the case of Assyriology than in that of the old Hebrew records, and the Assyriologist may therefo're be pardoned if he finds in such displays of ignorance merely a proof of the worthlessness of the 'critical' method. A method which leads its advocates to deny the facts stated by experts when these run counter to their own prepossessions cannot be of much value. At all events, it is a method with which the archaeologist and the historian can have nothing to do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of the Hebrews to the Roman Period HE present Short History is an attempt to furnish teachers or students of the Old Testament with a sketch of the actual course of Hebrew history, somewhat more con sistent with the present state of our knowledge than the text books now in use. The book presupposes, and is intended to encourage, a careful and intelligent study of the text of the Bible. With a brief outline of the history in his hands, a thoughtful student is probably best left to himself. In regard to many points of detail, he must freely use his own judgment, and the broad lessons, moral and religious, of the history, may be trusted to impress themselves on his mind without the aid of a manual. Book Description
Excerpt from The Makers of Hebrew Books in Italy: Being Chapters in the History of the Hebrew Printing Press In preparing the work I had the use of the splendid library of Dr. Julius H. Greenstone, rich in examples of nearly every Hebrew press in the world and containing many incunabula and other rarities. Many of the illustrations in this book are made from his collection. My manuscript was revised by my wife, and many of her valuable suggestions have found a place in these pages.
