Book Description
This new series Mechanics and Physics of Discrete Systems aims to provide a coherent picture of the modern development of discrete physical systems. Each volume will offer an orderly perspective of disciplines such as molecular dynamics, crystal mechanics and/or physics, dislocation, etc. Emphasized in particular are the fundamentals of mechanics and physics that play an essential role in engineering applications.Volume 1, Gauge Theory and Defects in Solids, presents a detailed development of a rational theory of the dynamics of defects and damage in solids. Solutions to field equations are used to determine stresses, dislocation densities and currents that arise from histories of loading of boundaries of bodies. Analysed in detail is a gauge theory with a gauge group that is not semi-simple, and whose action occurs at the classical macroscopic level. Yang-Mills theory is applied where the state variables are elastic displacements in solids, determination of mechanical and electromagnetic observables by choice of gauge conditions is demonstrated, and practices of classical dislocation theory are derived from first principles.

Book Description
This book is a unique presentation of thermodynamic methods of construction of continuous models. It is based on a uniform approach following from the entropy inequality and using Lagrange multipliers as auxiliary quantities in its evaluation. It covers a wide range of models OCo ideal gases, thermoviscoelastic fluids, thermoelastic and thermoviscoelastic solids, plastic polycrystals, miscible and immiscible mixtures, and many others. The structure of phenomenological thermodynamics is justified by a systematic derivation from the Liouville equation, through the BBGKY-hierarchy-derived Boltzmann equation, to an extended thermodynamics. In order to simplify the reading, an extensive introduction to classical continuum mechanics and thermostatics is included. As a complementary volume to Part II, which will contain applications and examples, and to Part III, which will cover numerical methods, only a few simple examples are presented in this first Part. One exception is an extensive example of a linear poroelastic material because it will not appear in future Parts. The book is the first presentation of continuum thermodynamics in which foundations of continuum mechanics, microscopic foundations and transition to extended thermodynamics, applications of extended thermodynamics beyond ideal gases, and thermodynamic foundations of various material theories are exposed in a uniform and rational way. The book may serve both as a support for advanced courses as well as a desk reference.

Book Description
This book provides a unified theory on nonlinear electro-magnetomechanical interactions of soft materials capable of large elastic deformations. The authors include an overview of the basic principles of the classic theory of electromagnetism from the fundamental notions of point charges and magnetic dipoles through to distributions of charge and current in a non-deformable continuum, time-dependent electromagnetic fields and Maxwell’s equations. They summarize relevant theories of continuum mechanics, required to account for the deformability of material and present a constitutive framework for the nonlinear magneto-and electroelastic interactions in a highly deformable material. The equations contained in the book formulate and solve a variety of representative boundary-value problems for both nonlinear magnetoelasticity and electroelasticity.

Book Description
This book is devoted to the theory of coupled electro-magneto-thermo-elastic fields excited in different bodies by various sources, both static and dynamic. It presents the classical piezoelectric and piezomagnetic effects, the Mindlin’s electroelastic coupling due to a polarization gradient, and different combinations of these effects with thermoelasticity.
