Pages : 189
Book Description
The book is a taxonomic guide to serpulid polychaetes (including the subfamily Spirorbinae) of the Arctic Ocean. Taxonomic keys include 37 serpulid spesies described and illustrated in detail. It starts with a description of serpulid morphology and includes a comprehensive glossary. Taxonomic treatment of species includes basic synonymy, references, and brief differential diagnoses. Information is also available on species reproduction, geographical distribution, and habitats in the Arctic Basin. Species illustrations are presented as light and scanning electron microscopy micrographs, photos of live specimens and line drawings. The book is based on extensive (over 600 samples) material collected all over the Arctic Ocean and deposited in Russia, Iceland, Germany, Norway, and Australia. The guide is based on the same material as Rzhavsky et al. (2014) “Calcareous tubeworms (Polychaeta, Serpulidae) of the Arctic Ocean”, but it has another concept and target user: it is a simplified and lavishly illustrated field guide for identification definition of calcareous tubeworms in the field and laboratory. Detailed synonymy and taxonomic discussions are excluded. This guide is intended for undergraduate and graduate students, educators and naturalists as well as invertebrate zoologists, marine ecologists, and environmental consultants.

Systematics and Diversity of Annelids
Author: Maria Capa
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3036513906
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 520
Book Description
In this Special Issue, we address the state of the art of the systematics of the main annelid groups and the improvements in the diversity they hold, with special emphasis on the latest discoveries in well-studied areas, expeditions to unsurveyed areas or environments, or the use of novel techniques that allow for the improvement of biodiversity knowledge. We are hoping that this Special Issue will provide a platform facilitating a review of current knowledge on the subject, identifying current research problems, as well as indicating directions and research trends for the future.

Marine Genetics
Author: Antonio M. Solé-Cava
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940172184X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
Our current knowledge of marine organisms and the factors affecting their ecology, distribution and evolution has been revolutionised by the use, in the last 20 years, of molecular population genetics tools. This book is the result of a meeting of world-leading experts, in Rio de Janeiro, where the state of the art of this field was reviewed. Topics covered include the molecular analysis of bio-invasions, the recent developments in marine biotechnology, the factors affecting levels of genetic variation and population structure in marine organisms and their application to conservation biology, fisheries and aquaculture. This is the first book dedicated to the genetic study of marine organisms. It will be very useful to biology students, scientists and anyone working or simply interested in areas such as marine biology, zoology, ecology, and population and molecular genetics.

ISBN: 3540276734
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1242
Book Description
Cold-water coral ecosystems figure the formation of large seabed structures such as reefs and giant carbonate mounds; they represent unexplored paleo-environmental archives of earth history. Like their tropical cousins, cold-water coral ecosystems harbour rich species diversity. For this volume, key institutions in cold-water coral research have contributed 62 state-of-the-art articles on topics from geology and oceanography to biology and conservation, with some impressive underwater images.
